Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, install, configure, and meticulously document complex video systems, including routers, switchers, encoders, media asset management (MAM), and playout automation.
  • Provide high-level technical support and act as an escalation point for all video-related systems, including live production, post-production, and streaming infrastructure.
  • Proactively monitor the health and performance of the entire video ecosystem, using network analysis tools and monitoring platforms to identify and resolve potential issues before they impact operations.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical faults across the video signal chain, from physical cabling and hardware failures to software configuration and network-related transport issues.
  • Manage and execute the planned maintenance, firmware updates, and software patching for all broadcast and video-related equipment to ensure security and stability.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical diagrams, and workflow documentation for all video systems and processes.
  • Collaborate closely with production staff, operators, and creative teams to understand their workflow requirements and provide effective technical solutions and support.
  • Lead or participate in technical projects related to system upgrades, new facility builds, or the integration of new video technologies and workflows.
  • Evaluate, test, and provide recommendations on new hardware and software technologies to enhance capabilities, improve efficiency, and future-proof the media infrastructure.
  • Manage relationships with technology vendors for technical support escalations, product information, and procurement.
  • Ensure all video and audio signals adhere to industry standards for quality, timing, and legality (e.g., loudness, closed captioning).
  • Configure and troubleshoot IP-based video transport systems, including multicast streaming and technologies like SMPTE 2110, NDI, and SRT.
  • Support live event productions by ensuring system readiness, providing on-call support, and performing real-time troubleshooting under pressure.
  • Administer and support Media Asset Management (MAM) and content archive systems, ensuring metadata integrity and efficient content retrieval.
  • Integrate video systems with other business and IT platforms, such as scheduling systems, ad-insertion technologies, and corporate networks.
  • Perform regular system backups and contribute to the development and testing of disaster recovery and business continuity plans for media operations.
  • Analyze system performance metrics and operational data to identify trends, predict potential failures, and recommend system optimizations.
  • Configure and manage video encoding profiles for various distribution platforms, including linear broadcast, VOD, and live streaming (HLS, DASH).
  • Provide technical training and guidance to junior technicians, operators, and other staff on video systems and operational best practices.
  • Install and terminate various types of broadcast cabling, including SDI, fiber optic, and category cables, ensuring adherence to professional standards.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Video/Audio Standards: Deep knowledge of SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G/12G-SDI signal paths, as well as embedded audio, timecode, and ancillary data.
  • IP Networking for Media: Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, UDP, Multicast, QoS) and media-over-IP protocols (SMPTE 2110, 2022-6, NDI, SRT).
  • Video Compression & Codecs: Expertise in video and audio compression standards such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and ProRes.
  • Streaming Protocols: Proficiency with adaptive bitrate streaming technologies including HLS and DASH.
  • System Administration: Experience managing systems running on Windows Server and Linux (RHEL, CentOS) environments.
  • Scripting & Automation: Ability to use scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell) to automate routine tasks and integrate systems.
  • Broadcast Systems: Hands-on experience with core broadcast equipment like video routers, production switchers, replay servers (e.g., EVS), and graphics systems.
