Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, build, and maintain comprehensive dashboards and data visualizations using tools like Tableau or Power BI to track key production metrics for stakeholders.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of artist, department, and show-level performance data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and areas for workflow improvement.
  • Manage and ensure the integrity of data within the primary production tracking system (e.g., ShotGrid/Shotgun, ftrack), performing regular audits and clean-up.
  • Develop and generate regular, detailed reports on shot status, quota attainment, version progress, and overall project health for production leadership and executive teams.
  • Analyze historical project data to provide data-driven insights for the bidding and scheduling of new projects, improving the accuracy of future forecasts.
  • Monitor render farm utilization, queue times, and error rates, providing analysis to optimize resource allocation and minimize rendering costs.
  • Collaborate directly with VFX Producers and Supervisors to translate their strategic questions into specific data queries and analytical projects.
  • Create and maintain forecasting models to predict resource needs, potential delivery delays, and budget variances throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Automate routine data gathering and reporting tasks using scripting languages, primarily Python, to increase efficiency and reduce manual effort.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the production database, acting as a first point of contact for production staff data-related queries.
  • Track and analyze the flow of assets and shots between different departments and external vendors to ensure a smooth and efficient pipeline.
  • Provide quantitative support for production meetings by preparing data points, charts, and summaries that facilitate informed discussion and decision-making.

Secondary Functions

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation for data-related workflows, reporting standards, and system best practices for training and reference.
  • Analyze cost-to-complete scenarios and provide data-backed recommendations for strategic adjustments to the production plan.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to answer urgent and novel questions from various departments.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by identifying new opportunities for data collection and analysis.
  • Collaborate with business units, such as finance and HR, to translate their data needs into technical requirements for the pipeline and engineering teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Production Tracking Software: Advanced proficiency in managing and extracting data from industry-standard systems like Autodesk ShotGrid (formerly Shotgun) or ftrack.
  • Data Visualization: Demonstrated ability to create clear, insightful, and automated dashboards using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, or Google Data Studio.
  • Scripting & Automation: Strong scripting skills, particularly with Python (including libraries like Pandas and NumPy), for data manipulation, automation, and API interaction.
  • Database Management: Solid understanding of and experience with SQL for querying and managing relational databases.
  • Advanced Spreadsheet Skills: Expertise in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets, including pivot tables, complex formulas, and macros for data analysis and reporting.
