Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Oversee the creative and technical execution of visual effects shots from concept through to final composition, ensuring alignment with the Director's vision.
- Supervise and mentor a team of VFX artists, providing clear creative direction, technical guidance, and constructive feedback to achieve the desired look and quality.
- Design and implement complex visual effects sequences, including particle simulations (fire, smoke, water), rigid body dynamics, and procedural generation techniques.
- Collaborate directly with Directors and key production stakeholders on-set to provide VFX supervision, ensuring proper data acquisition and shot planning for post-production.
- Manage the quality control process for all outgoing shots, performing final reviews and ensuring technical specifications and creative notes are fully addressed.
- Break down scripts and storyboards to define the specific VFX requirements, methodologies, and potential challenges for each sequence.
- Lead look development for key visual effects assets and sequences to establish the artistic and technical benchmark for the project.
- Develop and document efficient workflows and best practices to optimize the VFX pipeline, in collaboration with Pipeline TDs and department leads.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex artistic and technical issues that arise during shot production, providing innovative and efficient solutions.
- Attend dailies, rounds, and client review sessions, presenting work-in-progress and articulating the team's progress and creative choices.
- Contribute to the bidding process by providing accurate time and resource estimates based on creative briefs and scripts.
- Ensure the continuity of all visual effects elements across sequences and throughout the entire project.
- Create and integrate high-quality CG elements, including models, textures, lighting, and effects, into live-action plates.
- Perform advanced 2D compositing tasks using Nuke, including multi-pass CG integration, green screen extraction, rotoscoping, and set extensions.
- Research and develop new techniques, tools, and software to enhance the studio's creative capabilities and workflow efficiency.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the entire VFX pipeline, from asset creation and animation to lighting, rendering, and final compositing.
- Communicate effectively with the Production team to ensure shots are completed on schedule and within budget, flagging potential delays or overages.
- Guide the setup of lighting and rendering for complex scenes, ensuring photorealistic integration and consistency.
- Act as a key point of contact for inter-departmental queries, ensuring smooth collaboration between VFX and other departments like Animation, Editorial, and DI.
- Interpret and implement feedback from the VFX Supervisor and clients, ensuring revisions are executed accurately and efficiently across the artist team.
- Participate in pre-production planning meetings to strategize the most effective approaches for achieving complex visual effects shots.

Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert-Level Software Proficiency: Mastery of industry-standard software such as Nuke for compositing, Houdini for FX, and Maya for 3D/CG.
- Rendering Knowledge: In-depth experience with renderers like V-Ray, Arnold, Mantra, or Redshift.
- Scripting: Proficiency in Python scripting to create tools, automate tasks, and improve pipeline efficiency.
- 3D Generalist Skills: Strong understanding of the entire 3D pipeline, including modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, and lighting.
