Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain all studio equipment for recording sessions, including microphones, preamps, interfaces, and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs).
  • Engineer and direct live recording sessions with voice talent, providing clear guidance on performance, pacing, and tone to capture the best possible take.
  • Meticulously edit raw voice recordings to remove breaths, clicks, pops, and extraneous noises using advanced audio repair tools.
  • Perform detailed dialogue editing, ensuring seamless transitions, consistent pacing, and natural-sounding delivery across entire projects.
  • Process vocal tracks using equalization (EQ), compression, de-essing, and other effects to enhance clarity, warmth, and presence.
  • Mix and master voice-over tracks to meet specific loudness standards (e.g., LUFS) and delivery specifications for broadcast, web, and other platforms.
  • Manage and organize large volumes of audio files and project sessions, adhering to strict naming conventions and backup protocols.
  • Perform rigorous quality control (QC) checks on all final audio deliverables to ensure they are free of errors and meet all technical and creative requirements.
  • Sync edited and mixed voice-over tracks to video, animation, or presentations, ensuring perfect timing and lip-sync where applicable.
  • Collaborate closely with producers, directors, and clients to understand project goals and ensure the final audio aligns with their creative vision.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with studio hardware, software, and signal flow in a timely manner to minimize session downtime.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement new audio technologies, plugins, and workflows to continuously improve production quality and efficiency.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of acoustics and microphone placement techniques to capture a wide range of vocal styles and characteristics.
  • Prepare scripts for recording sessions, marking them for breath points, emphasis, and timing to guide the voice talent effectively.
  • Normalize, format, and export final audio files into various formats (WAV, MP3, AIFF, etc.) according to specific client or platform delivery specs.
  • Manage remote recording sessions with talent using technologies like Source-Connect, ipDTL, or SessionLinkPRO, ensuring high-fidelity capture.
  • Archive completed projects and associated assets in a structured and easily retrievable manner for future reference or revisions.
  • Provide constructive feedback to voice talent on their technical performance, such as mic technique and proximity, to improve recording quality.
  • Create and maintain templates and presets within the DAW for various project types to standardize workflows and increase speed.
  • Master multiple audio files for consistency in tone and volume across a series, such as an e-learning course or an audiobook.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc audio requests and technical explorations for new vocal effects or sound palettes.
  • Contribute to the organization's audio production standards, best practices, and workflow documentation.
  • Collaborate with creative, production, and localization teams to translate project needs into technical audio requirements.
  • Participate in project kick-off meetings and agile ceremonies to provide input on timelines and technical feasibility for audio components.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in at least one major Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), such as Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, or Logic Pro X.
  • Advanced command of audio repair and restoration software, particularly iZotope RX, for cleaning and salvaging dialogue.
  • Deep understanding of audio plugins, including EQs, compressors, limiters, de-essers, and noise gates, and their application to the human voice.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of microphone types, polar patterns, and advanced placement techniques for vocal recording.
  • Strong ability to mix and master audio to professional broadcast and streaming loudness standards (e.g., EBU R128, ATSC A/85).
  • Experience with audio-to-video synchronization and working with timecode.
  • Familiarity with remote recording technologies like Source-Connect or ISDN alternatives.
  • Solid understanding of digital audio fundamentals, including sample rates, bit depth, and file formats.
  • Proficient in file management, data wrangling, and adhering to strict organizational protocols.
  • Technical troubleshooting skills for both audio hardware (cables, interfaces, mics) and software (DAWs, plugins, drivers).
