Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, 360-degree assessments of existing volunteer programs to deliver a detailed analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT).

  • Formulate and codify comprehensive risk management policies and procedures tailored to volunteer activities, ensuring full compliance with legal, ethical, and safety standards.
  • Provide expert consultation on the selection, customization, and implementation of Volunteer Management Software (VMS) to streamline tracking, communication, and impact reporting.
  • Institute a systematic framework for measuring and reporting on volunteer impact, capturing both quantitative metrics (e.g., hours, economic value) and rich qualitative data (e.g., testimonials, skill development).
  • Facilitate high-stakes strategic planning sessions with executive leadership, boards, and key stakeholders to build consensus and galvanize support for new volunteer initiatives.
  • Coach and mentor internal staff responsible for the day-to-day supervision of volunteers, equipping them with best practices in delegation, feedback, and motivational leadership.
  • Implement robust feedback mechanisms, such as confidential surveys, listening tours, and focus groups, to consistently gather insights from volunteers and drive continuous program improvement.
  • Develop and oversee detailed project plans, timelines, and budgets for the seamless implementation of new or completely overhauled volunteer program initiatives.
  • Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships with corporations, universities, and community organizations to build sustainable pipelines for volunteer talent and corporate giving.
  • Author definitive program handbooks, policy manuals, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure operational consistency, quality, and scalability.
  • Critically evaluate and redesign volunteer program structures to enhance efficiency, improve the overall volunteer journey, and maximize return on engagement.
  • Offer expert, empathetic guidance on navigating and resolving complex volunteer-related conflicts, grievances, or performance challenges.
  • Develop a multi-faceted communications strategy to compellingly share the story of the volunteer program's impact with funders, the board, and the public.
  • Research and synthesize emerging trends, next-generation technologies, and academic research within volunteerism to keep client programs on the cutting edge.
  • Advise on the strategic integration of volunteer engagement metrics and narratives into grant proposals and fundraising appeals to demonstrate organizational capacity.
  • Lead the design and launch of specialized volunteer opportunities, such as skills-based projects, pro bono consulting engagements, and virtual or micro-volunteering programs.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 7+ years of progressive professional experience in the nonprofit sector, including at least 5 years in a role with direct responsibility for volunteer program strategy, development, and leadership.

Preferred: Proven experience in a formal consulting capacity is highly advantageous. A track record of successfully scaling a volunteer program, leading significant change management initiatives, and presenting strategic recommendations to executive leadership and boards of directors is strongly preferred.
