Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate sit-down forklifts, stand-up/reach trucks, pallet jacks, and electric stackers to load, unload, move, stack and stage pallets, cartons and bulk materials in accordance with company procedures and OSHA standards.
- Pick, stage and transport product for shipping, production or storage using pallet jacks, forklifts and hand trucks while maintaining picking accuracy and preventing product damage.
- Load and unload trailers, containers and railcars by positioning loads correctly and using appropriate load securement methods to maximize space and maintain stability.
- Perform cycle counts and assist with physical inventory counts; accurately scan and verify SKUs, lot codes and barcodes using RF scanners or mobile devices, and report discrepancies to inventory control.
- Receive incoming shipments: verify carrier paperwork, inspect packaging for damage, confirm quantities, and sign for freight when required.
- Stage and prepare outbound shipments by palletizing, shrink-wrapping, labeling, and staging for carrier pickup while ensuring shipment accuracy per bill of lading and packing lists.
- Inspect forklifts and material handling equipment before each shift; document defects, perform basic maintenance (fluid checks, charging batteries, tire inspections) and remove unfit equipment from service until repaired.
- Secure loads and ensure correct load distribution and weight limits are observed; use load charts and follow stacking patterns to prevent tip-over and product damage.
- Follow all site-specific safety procedures, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, battery charging and handling protocols, and emergency response processes.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dock personnel and warehouse teams to coordinate load assignments, prioritize order fulfillment and manage peak workflow.
- Execute order picking and put-away using location systems (bin/rack labeling) and warehouse management system (WMS) instructions; update WMS statuses as tasks are completed.
- Operate narrow-aisle and high-reach equipment safely when trained and certified; perform precise placement of pallets in elevated racks.
- Monitor inventory flow and notify supervisors of low stock, damaged goods or discrepancies that could impact customer orders or production schedules.
- Adhere to production schedules, shipping cutoffs, and carrier appointment windows to meet customer delivery expectations and KPI targets.
- Apply proper manual material handling techniques to minimize worker injury and product damage; use lifting aids and team lifts when required.
- Assist with loading/unloading non-standard freight, including oversized or irregularly shaped items, using slings, straps and conveyors as directed.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas (aisles, docks, staging areas and racks) to support safe operations and efficient material flow.
- Support cross-functional tasks such as order consolidation, kitting, labeling, rework, and light assembly when needed to meet operational demands.
- Record activity logs, equipment inspections and training compliance in required systems or paper records; participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Train and mentor new operators on safe forklift use, warehouse procedures and company policies under supervision of lead personnel.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: suggest process improvements, identify bottlenecks, and contribute to reducing material handling costs and damage.
- Operate yard equipment or assist yard drivers in coordinating trailer moves between docks when certified and authorized.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with any regulated product handling procedures (e.g., temperature-sensitive goods, hazardous materials) and follow HAZMAT packaging and documentation rules as applicable.
- Support special projects such as facility moves, seasonal surges, inventory resets and new product introductions with safe and efficient material handling practices.
Secondary Functions
- Assist inventory control and operations teams by providing timely feedback on SKU conditions, packaging issues and recurring damage patterns.
- Support daily maintenance schedules by coordinating battery charging/maintenance cycles and scheduling preventive service for material handling equipment.
- Participate in safety audits, root-cause analyses of incidents, and corrective action implementation to improve warehouse safety and compliance.
- Help maintain training records, certification renewals and OSHA-related documentation for forklift operators on site.
- Aid in cross-training initiatives to expand workforce flexibility across shipping, receiving, picking and staging functions.
- Provide input on tooling, racking and layout changes to improve material flow and reduce travel time during picking and put-away operations.
- Support dock scheduling and carrier communications during peak periods to minimize demurrage and expedite throughput.
