Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately pick and stage products for shipment from inventory using paper pick lists, RF scanners, or handheld devices, consistently meeting daily accuracy and productivity targets while minimizing mistakes and rework.
  • Pack customer and palletized orders to company packing standards, applying correct packing materials, cushioning, and void-fill to prevent damage during transit and ensure compliance with carrier requirements.
  • Label and prepare shipping documentation, including packing slips, bills of lading, and customs forms as required, ensuring all barcodes and labels are legible and placed according to SOPs.
  • Receive inbound shipments, verify quantities and SKUs against purchase orders, inspect for damages, and report discrepancies immediately to supervisors for resolution to maintain inventory integrity.
  • Load and unload trucks and trailers safely, using pallet jacks, hand trucks, lift gates, and forklifts (if certified), ensuring proper load distribution and securement to prevent shifting in transit.
  • Operate warehouse equipment such as electric pallet jacks, stand-up/porder pickers, conveyors, and stretch wrap machines while following lockout/tagout and equipment safety procedures.
  • Conduct routine cycle counts and assist with physical inventory counts, reconciling variances, documenting findings, and supporting inventory accuracy initiatives in the WMS.
  • Stage, sequence, and lineup product on the production or shipping line to meet production schedules and carrier pickup windows, communicating timing constraints and exceptions to leads.
  • Follow FIFO/LIFO/FEFO inventory rotation practices and quality control checks to maintain product freshness and reduce expired or obsolete inventory incidents.
  • Apply basic quality inspection techniques to identify damaged, mislabeled, or nonconforming products; quarantine items per SOP and initiate corrective action reports as required.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas including aisles, staging zones, and pallet racking to reduce hazards, improve flow, and support lean warehouse practices.
  • Use simple hand tools for minor pallet repair, carton rework, and packaging adjustments while escalating mechanical issues or safety risks to maintenance or supervisors.
  • Execute returns processing and put-away tasks for returned goods, ensuring accurate lots, serial numbers, and disposition codes are recorded in the WMS.
  • Assist in kitting and assembly tasks on the production line, combining components into finished kits per bill-of-materials and documentation to support downstream operations.
  • Monitor and report inventory shrinkage, damaged goods, and near-miss incidents to help drive continuous improvement in loss prevention and quality programs.
  • Support cross-docking activities by rapidly receiving, sorting, and transferring goods between inbound and outbound trucks with minimal storage time to accelerate throughput.
  • Maintain accurate workstation logs, production counts, and exception reports in electronic or paper formats to support shift handovers and performance tracking.
  • Adhere to all safety policies, PPE requirements, and OSHA/MHSA standards, participate in toolbox talks and safety training, and proactively identify hazards for corrective action.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, forklift operators, quality, and shipping teams to prioritize picks, expedite urgent orders, and resolve inventory or packaging issues in real time.
  • Meet productivity and attendance expectations, participate in continuous improvement Kaizen events, and suggest process improvements that reduce cycle time and increase accuracy.
  • Assist with temperature-controlled handling when required (e.g., refrigerated/frozen goods), following SOPs for product integrity, time-in-temperature recording, and PPE.
  • Support onboarding and training of new line workers by demonstrating standard procedures, safe equipment use, and quality expectations when assigned as a mentor.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in special projects such as layout reconfiguration, process mapping, and pilot implementations of new warehouse technologies (WMS or voice picking).
  • Help reconcile and close daily shipping manifests, coordinate with carriers for missed pickups or driver exceptions, and document incident reports for carrier claims.
  • Collect and prepare scrap, recyclable materials, and packing waste for proper disposal or recycling programs to support environmental and cost-savings initiatives.
  • Assist maintenance or engineering teams during scheduled downtime by staging materials, securing the work area, and performing basic machine cleaning tasks.
  • Support data entry tasks in the WMS for product master updates, location changes, and cycle count adjustments under supervisor review.
  • Provide backup coverage across adjacent warehouse functions (receiving, shipping, inventory control) during peak periods or staffing shortages to maintain operational continuity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient with warehouse management systems (WMS) and handheld RF/barcode scanners for picking, receiving, and cycle counting.
  • Experienced in order picking methods (piece pick, batch pick, zone pick) and packing to standardized packing lists and carrier specifications.
  • Safe operation of material handling equipment: pallet jacks, hand trucks, dollies, electric pallet stackers; forklift operation a plus with certification.
  • Familiarity with shipping carriers' documentation and labeling standards (UPS, FedEx, LTL, freight) and basic understanding of carrier appointment processes.
  • Inventory control techniques including FIFO/FEFO rotation, cycle counting, discrepancy research, and reconciliation.
  • Competence in basic pallet building, stretch-wrapping, and load securement using straps and stretch film to ensure stable loads for transport.
  • Ability to read pick tickets, packing slips, SKU numbers, and simple technical drawings or assembly instructions.
  • Basic computer skills: data entry, reading email, accessing WMS dashboards, and using mobile apps for task management.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards (OSHA), PPE usage, and safe lifting techniques; able to follow lockout/tagout basics when required.
  • Experience with temperature-controlled storage and handling procedures for refrigerated/frozen products where applicable.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent work experience in a warehouse or distribution center accepted.

Preferred Education:

  • Forklift or material handling certification preferred.
