Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive inbound shipments, verify shipment quantities and condition against packing lists and purchase orders, sign for freight, and report discrepancies or damages promptly to the supervisor and procurement team.
  • Operate sit-down and stand-up forklifts safely to unload trailers, move pallets to staging areas, and place product into assigned locations within racking systems while following load capacity and safety protocols.
  • Accurately pick customer orders using RF scanners, pick-to-light systems, or barcode labels, confirm SKU, quantity, and lot/serial numbers where applicable, and prepare orders for packing and shipping to meet on-time delivery targets.
  • Pack orders using specified packaging materials and methods to protect product during transit, verify packing lists and shipping labels for accuracy, and ensure carrier requirements are met for LTL/parcel shipments.
  • Stage and load outbound shipments onto trucks using pallet jacks and forklifts, secure loads with straps and stretch wrap, obtain carrier signatures, and complete shipment documentation to comply with customer SLAs.
  • Perform cycle counts and assist in full physical inventory counts, investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies, document findings, and coordinate adjustments in the WMS with inventory control or supervisory staff.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate inventory balances in the Warehouse Management System (WMS)/ERP, enter receipts, bin transfers, and transaction updates in a timely manner to support inventory accuracy and availability.
  • Inspect and document product condition during receiving and movement; quarantine and label damaged or non-conforming items, initiate claims or return authorizations according to company procedures.
  • Follow and enforce safety policies including proper lifting techniques, PPE usage, permit-to-work requirements, and housekeeping standards to maintain a hazard-free warehouse environment.
  • Load and unload trucks, containers, and trailers efficiently while optimizing dock operations and minimizing dwell time to support carrier schedules and distribution metrics.
  • Prepare shipping documentation including bills of lading, commercial invoices, manifests, and carrier paperwork for domestic and international shipments when required.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple workload demands during peak periods, including same-day order fulfillment, expedited shipments, and high-volume receiving cycles, while maintaining accuracy and productivity targets.
  • Use hand tools, scales, tape guns, stretch wrap machines, and other packaging equipment properly and report malfunctioning equipment for timely repair to avoid disruption.
  • Support returns processing and reverse logistics by inspecting returned product, restocking saleable items, tagging/or quarantining damaged goods, and coordinating with customer service or QC teams for disposition.
  • Coordinate with transportation and carrier partners to schedule appointments, confirm pickup windows, and provide any required documentation or special handling instructions to ensure on-time pickup and delivery.
  • Maintain organized storage and racking, rotate stock based on FIFO/FEFO principles, and re-slot inventory as needed to optimize picking routes and reduce travel time.
  • Adhere to quality standards and customer-specific packing and labeling instructions, including lot traceability, expiration dating, and special handling for hazardous materials if applicable.
  • Assist with training and onboarding of new warehouse staff on safety, equipment operation, WMS transactions, and standard operating procedures to maintain consistent performance.
  • Record and report daily production metrics, safety incidents, damages, and near misses to supervisors; propose ideas to improve throughput, reduce waste, and increase accuracy.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by participating in 5S activities, Kaizen events, root cause analysis for errors, and implementing process changes to improve efficiency.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors, dispatch, inventory control, and customer service for order exceptions, inventory shortages, and fulfillment delays to enable rapid resolution.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc logistics tasks such as assisting with inventory audits, special projects, promotional kit builds, and seasonal surge activities.
  • Contribute to the organization's continuous improvement efforts by documenting bottlenecks, suggesting process changes, and participating in cross-functional improvement teams.
  • Collaborate with procurement and receiving to manage vendor returns, short-ship investigations, and supplier quality issues.
  • Assist in generating shift reports, packing lists, and basic inventory reconciliation spreadsheets for management review.
  • Train and mentor cross-functional peers on equipment safe operation, proper material handling, and WMS transaction best practices.
  • Help maintain compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards by participating in safety meetings, hazard assessments, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Liaise with carriers and transportation coordinators to troubleshoot exceptions, damage claims, and routing discrepancies as needed.
  • Perform light maintenance on warehouse equipment, escalate repair needs, and ensure all tools and machinery are stored and maintained according to SOPs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient forklift operation (sit-down, stand-up, reach, order picker) with valid certification; experience with propane, electric, and battery systems.
  • Experience using RF barcode scanners, pick-to-light systems, and handheld mobile computers for picking, receiving, and cycle counting.
  • Familiarity with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as Manhattan, JDA/Blue Yonder, PeopleSoft, SAP EWM, or Oracle WMS and basic ERP transaction flows.
  • Strong shipping and receiving skills including packing, palletizing, load securement, and preparing bills of lading and carrier paperwork.
  • Inventory control and cycle counting experience with demonstrated ability to investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT rules for freight, and safe material handling procedures including PPE and lockout/tagout basics.
  • Basic computer literacy (MS Excel for data entry and reporting, email communication, and simple spreadsheets).
  • Experience handling hazardous materials (HAZMAT) packaging and labeling preferred where applicable and knowledge of MSDS/SDS requirements.
  • Ability to operate packaging equipment (tape machines, stretch wrappers, scales) and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with LTL and FTL carrier processes, pallet configurations, and freight class/weight requirements.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree or coursework in logistics, supply chain management, or industrial technology considered a plus.

Experience Requirements

Prior experience in high-volume distribution centers, ecommerce fulfillment, or third-party logistics (3PL) environments is a strong plus.
