Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately pick, verify, and pack customer orders using packing lists and/or handheld scanners, ensuring each shipment matches purchase orders and customer specifications.
  • Select and use appropriate packing materials (boxes, void fill, bubble wrap, tape, straps) to minimize damage and transit cost while meeting carrier requirements and company packaging standards.
  • Prepare shipping labels, commercial invoices, and packing slips; print and apply carrier-specific labels and documentation (UPS, FedEx, USPS, LTL) to packages and pallets.
  • Inspect products for damage, defects, or quality issues before packing; report discrepancies and follow established return or quarantine procedures for non-conforming items.
  • Measure and weigh packages accurately, capture dimensions and weight in the WMS or shipping software, and enter correct package attributes to ensure accurate carrier rates and tracking.
  • Assemble boxes, crates or customized packaging, including multi-piece SKU consolidation and fragile item cushioning, to ensure safe delivery and professional presentation.
  • Palletize orders by stacking boxes to maximize load stability and meet carrier/pallet configuration standards; apply stretch wrap and strapping to secure pallet loads.
  • Operate packing and material handling equipment such as tape guns, label printers, table-top strapping machines, shrink wrap machines and conveyor systems safely and efficiently.
  • Use handheld barcode scanners/WMS terminals to confirm picks, record pack confirmation, and update inventory status in real time.
  • Maintain shipment accuracy by cross-checking SKU numbers, lot codes, serial numbers, expiration dates and any special handling instructions required by the customer or product type.
  • Ensure outbound shipments meet carrier cut-off times by coordinating with transportation teams and adjusting packing priorities during peak periods.
  • Meet daily and hourly productivity targets and KPIs such as picks per hour, orders packed per shift, error rate, on-time shipping percentage and damage rate reduction.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and packing guidelines for fragile, oversized, hazardous, temperature-sensitive or regulated items to maintain compliance with internal and external requirements.
  • Prepare and process return shipments, restock received returned items, and document reasons for return in the WMS following returns handling procedures.
  • Perform cycle counts and inventory checks within the packing zone to support inventory accuracy and escalate discrepancies to inventory control.
  • Tag and segregate products requiring special handling or packaging (e.g., hazardous materials, fragile components, luxury items) and coordinate with supervisors for approval and documentation.
  • Assist with loading outbound trucks when necessary, ensuring proper pallet placement and documentation for carrier manifests.
  • Participate in packing line setups for promotions, kitting, or special orders; follow kitting instructions to assemble multi-item packs or promotional bundles.
  • Maintain a clean, organized packaging area; dispose of waste and recyclable packing materials according to company recycling and waste policies.
  • Document packing exceptions, damages, and process deviations; complete daily logs and incident reports as required by supervisors.
  • Train and mentor new packing staff on best practices, packing standards, equipment use and safety procedures to sustain consistent quality across shifts.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by recommending packaging optimizations, cost reduction strategies, and process changes to reduce damage and speed throughput.
  • Support seasonal surges and high-volume periods by adjusting workflows, supporting cross-functional teams and working flexible shifts as business needs dictate.
  • Coordinate with customer service and order management teams to clarify special packing instructions, expedite shipments, and resolve order discrepancies before dispatch.

Secondary Functions

  • Aid the shipping department with load planning and carrier communication for timely pickups and manifest preparation.
  • Assist inventory control with cycle counts, discrepancy investigations and replenishment of packing stock and materials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:
