Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day production and warehouse activities across one or more shifts, ensuring adherence to production schedules, customer order priorities, and service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of hourly associates, team leads and temporary staff through hiring, onboarding, training, performance feedback, disciplinary actions, and career development plans to maintain a high-performing workforce.
  • Manage staffing plans and shift schedules, proactively adjusting headcount and assignments to meet fluctuating demand, minimize overtime costs, and optimize labor utilization.
  • Monitor production lines and warehouse workflows to maximize throughput and minimize bottlenecks; set clear daily targets and use real-time reporting to drive corrective actions.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through cycle counts, periodic audits and reconciliation processes; investigate and resolve variances while implementing process changes to reduce future discrepancies.
  • Enforce and continuously improve safety, food/ product safety and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, GMP, HACCP where applicable); lead safety meetings, incident investigations, and corrective action plans to minimize accidents and ensure a safe work environment.
  • Implement and sustain Lean/5S, Kaizen and continuous improvement initiatives that reduce waste, improve flow, shorten changeover times, and increase overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Oversee inbound receiving, put-away, replenishment and outbound shipping operations to maintain efficient material flow and meet customer delivery windows while minimizing damage and errors.
  • Ensure product quality and conformance to specifications by supervising in-process inspections, controlling non-conforming product, facilitating root cause analysis and verifying corrective actions.
  • Operate and manage warehouse management systems (WMS), ERP systems (SAP, Oracle or similar) and handheld RF devices for order processing, inventory movements, and production reporting.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and repair activities for material handling and production equipment; work closely with maintenance or contractors to minimize downtime and schedule planned outages.
  • Prepare, analyze and report production and warehouse KPIs such as units per hour, orders shipped, on-time delivery, inventory accuracy, labor productivity, scrap, and downtime — and present results to plant leadership with recommended actions.
  • Manage changeovers, line reconfigurations and new product introductions, ensuring proper training, documentation, and validation of processes prior to full production.
  • Control and monitor labor cost, overtime, scrap and supply usage; participate in budgeting and cost reduction initiatives to meet financial targets.
  • Lead cross-functional coordination with planning, procurement, quality, engineering and customer service to resolve constraints, expedite orders and implement process improvements.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections of storage conditions, labeling, pallet quality, and compliance with FIFO/LIFO requirements to prevent product obsolescence and ensure traceability.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions and training materials; ensure all team members follow documented processes and receive appropriate competency verification.
  • Supervise special handling and staging for returns, recalls, quality holds, and quarantined inventory; create containment and disposition plans in partnership with quality and supply chain teams.
  • Manage vendor and contractor activity onsite (e.g., third-party logistics, temporary labor providers, equipment service technicians), ensuring compliance with site rules, safety requirements and contractual obligations.
  • Drive continuous safety and quality culture by facilitating toolbox talks, daily huddles, shift handovers and employee engagement programs that reinforce expectations and share performance metrics.
  • Investigate production incidents, near-misses and customer complaints; lead root cause analyses (5 Whys, Fishbone) and ensure timely implementation and verification of corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).

Secondary Functions

  • Support periodic physical inventory counts, cycle count programs and month-end reconciliation activities; own action plans to resolve discrepancies and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Assist in implementing WMS/ERP enhancements, testing system changes, and training users on new functionality or process updates.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects, pilot programs and cross-functional task forces to scale best practices across sites.
  • Coordinate seasonal workforce planning and temporary labor strategies to support peak periods while maintaining quality and service standards.
  • Prepare and present weekly and monthly management reports, root cause summaries and action plans to senior operations and supply chain leadership.
  • Maintain records and documentation required for audits, regulatory inspections and internal compliance reviews.
  • Act as backup for adjacent supervisory roles during absences or high-volume periods, ensuring continuity of operations.
  • Support material flow planning, kanban replenishment, and minor procurement requests to prevent line stoppages.
  • Facilitate communication between day and night shifts, ensuring consistent execution of priorities, handoffs, and follow-up on open issues.
  • Mentor emerging leaders and support the development of succession plans for key operational roles.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Manhattan or similar, including daily transaction processing and reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory control techniques including cycle counts, FIFO/LIFO, lot tracking and traceability.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas) for KPI analysis, scheduling and reporting.
  • Hands-on experience with material handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors, sorters) and familiarity with equipment safety protocols; forklift certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to use handheld RF scanners, barcode labeling systems, and basic data entry tools.
  • Competency in production planning and scheduling fundamentals, labor planning, and shift management to meet throughput targets.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA regulations, workplace safety best practices, and incident investigation techniques.
  • Experience leading Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies (5S, Kaizen, SMED, value stream mapping).
  • Practical knowledge of quality control processes, non-conformance handling, and corrective action systems.
  • Ability to read production drawings, packaging specifications and SOP documentation; basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting line issues.
  • Familiarity with shipping regulations (DOT, hazardous materials basics if applicable), packaging standards, and carrier coordination.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3–7 years of progressive experience in warehouse, distribution or production environments, including at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead role.

Preferred: 5+ years of multi-shift supervisory experience in a high-volume warehouse or manufacturing facility, demonstrated success with inventory management, Lean initiatives, and cross-functional leadership.
