Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead the installation, modification and commissioning of warehouse material handling equipment (conveyors, sorters, palletizers, lifts, automated storage and retrieval systems) from receiving design intent through handover to operations, ensuring uptime and safety requirements are met.
- Manage small to medium capital projects including scheduling, scope definition, resource allocation, budgeting, procurement coordination, and risk mitigation to meet delivery milestones and cost targets.
- Perform mechanical assembly, alignment, fabrication and field wiring for new equipment and retrofits, reading mechanical and electrical drawings, schematics and installation manuals to ensure correct implementation.
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical failures on conveyors, motors, gearboxes, controls and sensors; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to restore service quickly and prevent recurrence.
- Coordinate and supervise third-party contractors, vendors and installation teams on site; verify compliance with company standards, contract scopes, and safety protocols and sign off on completed work.
- Support commissioning and validation activities, including sequence-of-operations checks, functional testing, conveyor speed tuning, sensor calibration and integration with WMS/WES systems.
- Implement preventive maintenance and inspection programs for material handling equipment; create and update maintenance work instructions, checklists and spare parts lists.
- Execute pallet racking and mezzanine installations, including layout verification, seismic and load compliance checks, anchor bolt pattern verification, and documentation of as-built conditions.
- Lead changeover projects for layout reconfiguration, lane additions or throughput upgrades while minimizing disruption to daily operations and maintaining KPI targets (throughput, order accuracy, downtime).
- Maintain clear project documentation — installation records, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, test plans, commissioning reports and handover packages for operations and maintenance teams.
- Use CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to log work orders, update asset records, track MTTR/MTBF metrics and schedule planned maintenance tasks to extend equipment life.
- Collaborate with operations, industrial engineering and safety teams to translate business needs into technical requirements and ensure process design is scalable, maintainable and ergonomically safe.
- Develop and deliver training for operators and maintenance technicians on new equipment, safe operating procedures, lockout/tagout, and first-line troubleshooting to reduce mean time to repair.
- Drive continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives by recommending design changes, standardization of components, and improvements to spare parts strategy.
- Ensure all project work complies with OSHA, local codes and company safety policies including permit-to-work, hot work permits, fall protection, confined space entry and required PPE enforcement.
- Perform electrical tasks up to the technician level where permitted — run conduit, terminate power/control wiring, verify motor starters, VFD parameters and basic PLC I/O checks per company standards.
- Support spare parts inventory management for critical components; source long-lead or obsolete parts and help maintain a bill of materials for rapid replacement.
- Participate in pre-installation site surveys and layout verification including structural assessments, utility availability checks and identification of obstructions or code restrictions.
- Conduct risk assessments and method statements for project tasks, implementing mitigations for high-risk activities and escalating unresolved hazards to management.
- Provide on-call support for critical after-hours incidents affecting material handling equipment or project deliverables, coordinating emergency repairs and vendor response as needed.
- Ensure quality control during installations by verifying tolerances, fastener torques, alignment, and electrical integrity; perform punch-list completion and final sign-off with stakeholders.
- Drive documentation of lessons learned post-project, capturing performance against plan, failure modes encountered and recommendations for future projects.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with lifecycle asset planning and budget forecasting by providing technical input on equipment replacement timing and projected maintenance costs.
- Support root-cause investigations for chronic operational issues, partnering with reliability engineers to define capital improvement projects.
- Provide technical support and escalation path for operations during peak periods, special projects and seasonal campaigns.
- Participate in continuous improvement workshops (Kaizen, 5S, Lean) focused on layout, process flow and equipment reliability improvements.
- Maintain training records and competency matrices for technicians and operators for audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
