Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive, inspect and verify incoming shipments against purchase orders and packing lists, documenting damaged or missing items and initiating vendor or carrier claims when discrepancies occur.
- Accurately unload cartons, pallets and bulk items from trucks using proper equipment (pallet jack, forklift when certified) and stage received goods to designated receiving or quarantine areas according to established procedures.
- Operate RF barcode scanners and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to record receipts, put-away actions and location changes, ensuring all electronic records match physical inventory.
- Perform systematic put-away using slotting guidelines and warehouse layout optimization to minimize travel time and maximize space utilization while recording location assignments in the WMS.
- Pick and prepare customer or internal orders via batch, zone or wave picking methods, ensuring order accuracy, proper packing, labeling and timely handoff to shipping.
- Execute daily cycle counts and periodic physical inventories, reconcile count variances by investigating root causes, and update system records or escalate to inventory control as needed.
- Maintain accurate lot/serial number tracking and expiration date control (first-expired, first-out / FEFO or FIFO), including labeling and segregation of time-sensitive products.
- Package, palletize and prepare shipments for carrier pickup, complete Bills of Lading and carrier paperwork, and verify carrier requirements for special handling or hazardous materials.
- Stage and load outbound freight for carriers, verifying trailer counts, securing loads to meet DOT and company safety standards, and documenting load confirmations in the WMS.
- Monitor stock levels, identify low-stock conditions, and communicate replenishment needs to purchasing or floor replenishment teams to avoid stockouts.
- Inspect and maintain warehouse storage areas for correct racking, signage, bin labels and floor markings; implement housekeeping to reduce picking errors and safety risks.
- Label inventory locations, shelves and pallets with accurate barcodes and human-readable information to improve pick rates and reduce cycle count differences.
- Process returns and vendor/customer exchanges, determine disposition (restock, inspect, scrap) and follow reverse logistics procedures to update inventory records.
- Reconcile discrepancies between physical counts and system inventory by performing investigations, correcting data entry errors, and documenting adjustments with appropriate approvals.
- Implement and follow safety policies, including use of PPE, adherence to OSHA and company procedures, and immediate reporting of hazards or incidents to management.
- Train and mentor new stock clerks on standard operating procedures, safe equipment operation and WMS usage to ensure consistent team performance.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives by documenting process inefficiencies, proposing workflow changes and participating in kaizen or Lean projects.
- Maintain accurate cycle time and productivity records (units per hour, lines per hour), striving to meet or exceed departmental KPIs for accuracy and throughput.
- Coordinate with shipping, receiving, purchasing and customer service teams to resolve order exceptions, expedite urgent shipments and support special projects.
- Safeguard inventory against theft, spoilage and damage by enforcing security protocols, proper storage methods, and temperature control where required.
- Handle basic documentation for hazardous materials if applicable, ensuring proper labeling, segregation and training compliance for HAZMAT shipments.
- Support cross-dock operations by quickly sorting inbound items for immediate outbound shipment and updating WMS transaction statuses.
- Execute light maintenance and equipment inspections, identifying malfunctioning material handling equipment and arranging repairs or reporting to supervisor.
- Prepare daily logs, production reports and inventory adjustment forms for submission to the warehouse lead or inventory control manager.
Secondary Functions
- Participate in continuous improvement and 5S initiatives to enhance organization, reduce waste and streamline picking/put-away flows.
- Support ad-hoc reporting requests for inventory queries and provide context for count discrepancies to supply chain or procurement teams.
- Assist with seasonal inventory surges and special projects, including new product introductions or store replenishment events.
- Cross-train on complementary warehouse roles (shipping, receiving, picking, packing) to provide coverage during peak periods and absences.
- Serve as a point of contact for carriers and vendors at the dock, coordinating arrival times and unloading priorities when required.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
