The Warehouse Systems Engineer is responsible for the technical design, implementation, integration, testing, deployment and ongoing optimization of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), warehouse control systems (WCS), material handling control systems (MHCS) and related automation across distribution centers. This role partners with operations, IT, engineering, vendors and business stakeholders to translate warehouse business processes into scalable technical solutions, lead WMS/configuration activities, manage software/hardware releases, troubleshoot production incidents, and drive continuous improvement in inventory accuracy, throughput and labor productivity. The ideal candidate is experienced with WMS platforms (Blue Yonder/JDA/Manhattan/SAP EWM), controls and PLC integration, API/EDI integrations, SQL/databases, and on-site commissioning of automation (conveyors, sortation, robotics, palletizers, ASRS).

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end WMS implementations and software configuration projects, including requirements gathering, solution design, functional and technical specifications, test planning, data migration strategies and go-live cutover plans to ensure timely and low-risk deployments.
  • Design and implement integrations between WMS, ERP (SAP, Oracle, Netsuite), TMS, OMS and 3PL systems using REST/SOAP APIs, EDI, file-based interfaces and middleware (e.g., MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, BizTalk), ensuring secure, resilient and auditable data flows.
  • Develop detailed system design documents, configuration standards, ERDs and integration mappings that translate warehouse operational processes (receiving, cross-docking, putaway, picking, packing, shipping) into maintainable WMS configurations and automation logic.
  • Configure and tune WMS modules for inventory management, inbound receiving, putaway algorithms, location management, directed picking, wave management, batch and lot tracking, cycle counting and replenishment to maximize inventory accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers and vendors to design and validate PLC/HMI logic, conveyor/sortation control strategies, robot orchestration and PLC-WCS-WMS communication, including OPC/OPC-UA, MQTT and proprietary protocols during factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).
  • Lead hands-on commissionings such as system cutover, RF/handheld device provisioning, barcode/label formats, scale and scanner calibration, and choreograph on-site testing of automation sequences to validate end-to-end material flow and exception handling.
  • Troubleshoot complex production incidents and drive root cause analysis across software, network, hardware and PLC layers; author remediation plans, apply patches, and coordinate emergency change windows with operations to restore SLA targets.
  • Maintain and tune warehouse control and execution logic (WCS/MHCS) to optimize throughput, reduce bottlenecks and improve order cycle times based on telemetry, trace data and performance KPIs.
  • Deliver and maintain technical integrations for carrier systems, parcel manifesting, and shipping APIs; validate shipment data flows, labels and compliance requirements for multi-carrier environments.
  • Implement and maintain RF data collection and handheld terminal configurations (Zebra/Intermec/CipherLab), including OS imaging, device provisioning, wireless on-site troubleshooting and security configurations.
  • Create and maintain automated dashboards, operational reports and executive-level KPIs (OTIF, cycle count accuracy, picks per hour, throughput, backlog) using SQL, Power BI, Tableau or other BI tools to support data-driven decisions.
  • Plan and execute WMS upgrades, patching schedules and regression testing strategies, including sandbox validation, automated test script creation and coordination of UAT with warehouse operations to minimize downtime and deployment risk.
  • Manage relationships with WMS vendors, system integrators, automation vendors and third-party support partners; negotiate scopes of work, follow up on change requests and ensure contractual SLAs are met for support and maintenance.
  • Design and enforce security, access control and audit logging for warehouse systems, including role-based access, segregation of duties, and integration with corporate identity providers (AD/LDAP/SAML).
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives such as slotting optimization, pick path optimization, wave and batch strategies, labor forecasting, and warehouse layout changes by translating operations requirements into system enhancements and automation rules.
  • Lead cross-functional technical workshops and operational walkthroughs to validate system designs, acceptance criteria and training plans; capture feedback and iterate configurations prior to go-live.
  • Author and maintain runbooks, operational run sheets, incident response playbooks and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for WMS, WCS and automation interactions to enable 24/7 support and rapid incident resolution.
  • Mentor junior engineers, provide technical leadership during integrations and deployments, and establish development and configuration best practices including version control, change management and release hygiene.
  • Conduct performance and capacity planning for WMS and automation infrastructure, forecasting growth, recommending hardware and network improvements, and collaborating with IT to right-size compute, storage and network resources.
  • Execute and oversee data migration and reconciliation efforts including SKU master data cleansing, inventory load validation, historical transaction reconciliation and cutover verification to protect inventory accuracy during system transitions.
  • Lead the design and validation of barcode and labeling standards, RFID tagging strategies, and electronic data capture methodologies to ensure traceability, compliance and seamless scanning throughput across material handling flows.
  • Participate in procurement activities by evaluating automation/control hardware and WMS software proposals, contributing to RFPs, and performing technical due diligence on vendor deliverables to align technical decisions with business ROI.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, safety and customer-specific requirements (lot/serial traceability, hazardous goods handling, chain of custody) by configuring WMS rules, exception workflows and audit trails.
  • Support continuous site improvements by analyzing telemetry and event logs, recommending software automations and process changes that reduce manual touchpoints, drive labor productivity and improve throughput consistency.

  • Support ad-hoc analytics, data extraction and exploratory analysis to answer operations questions and inform continuous improvement projects.
  • Contribute to the organization's roadmap for warehouse technology by evaluating emerging solutions (robotics, AS/RS, vision systems, RFID, IoT) and identifying pilot opportunities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as Blue Yonder (JDA), Manhattan Associates, RedPrairie, Körber, HighJump, or SAP EWM — including configuration, module tuning and upgrade management.
  • Strong experience integrating WMS to ERP/TMS/OMS via REST/SOAP APIs, EDI (X12/EDIFACT), SFTP/flat-file exchanges and middleware platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, BizTalk).
  • Proficient in SQL and relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL) for query tuning, reporting, data migration and troubleshooting live transaction issues.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Information Systems or Supply Chain Management.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Supply Chain Management, or MBA with technical emphasis; relevant professional certifications (APICS/CPIM/CSCP, Blue Yonder/Manhattan certification, PLC vendor certs) are a plus.
