Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Receive inbound shipments, unload trailers safely and efficiently, inspect shipments for accuracy and damage, verify packing lists and bills of lading, and record exceptions in the warehouse management system (WMS) to ensure accurate receiving and disposition of goods.
- Operate forklifts, reach trucks, pallet jacks, and other powered industrial equipment to move, stage, and stack product according to established slotting plans while maintaining OSHA-compliant safety practices and proper load securement.
- Accurately pick customer orders using RF/barcode scanners and WMS-directed workflows; perform batch picking, wave picking, and single-order picking to meet productivity targets and reduce order cycle time.
- Pack and prepare outbound orders by selecting appropriate packing materials, applying correct labels, verifying SKU, quantity and quality, and preparing shipping documentation (manifests, bills of lading, carrier labels) to meet carrier and client requirements.
- Perform cycle counts, monthly physical inventories, and ad-hoc inventory reconciliations; investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and execute corrective actions to maintain inventory accuracy and minimize shrinkage.
- Stage and load outbound freight correctly, follow carrier-specific loading procedures, verify load integrity, and coordinate with transportation partners to meet scheduled pickup windows and minimize freight claims.
- Use warehouse management systems (WMS), ERP modules (e.g., SAP, Oracle), and handheld RF devices to update inventory locations, process receipts, print labels, and close work orders accurately and in real time.
- Adhere to FIFO/FEFO (first-in/first-out, first-expired/first-out) inventory strategies for perishable, serialized, and batch-tracked products to ensure product quality and regulatory compliance.
- Identify damaged, defective, or expired product during receiving or picking; quarantine items as required, document issues, communicate with inventory control and procurement, and process returns or vendor claims in accordance with company policy.
- Maintain staging areas, picking zones, and workstations in a clean, organized, and hazard-free condition; perform regular housekeeping and facility upkeep to support a safe and efficient warehouse environment.
- Execute quality assurance checks on picked orders, ensuring count accuracy, correct SKU selection, and proper packaging to reduce customer returns and increase first-time-right shipping performance.
- Participate in daily shift briefings and huddles, communicate status and issues to supervisors, and provide input on process bottlenecks and operational improvements to raise throughput and reduce cost per order.
- Meet or exceed daily and hourly productivity standards and key performance indicators (KPIs) such as picks per hour, order accuracy, on-time shipments, and dock-to-stock velocity while balancing quality and safety.
- Properly apply labels, batch/lot and serial number tracking, and compliance markings (e.g., hazardous material labeling, regulatory tags) to meet internal and external audit requirements for traceability.
- Assist with returns processing (RMA), inspecting returned goods, restocking saleable inventory, and documenting disposition for non-saleable items to protect inventory value and customer experience.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-dock operations by quickly receiving, sorting, and re-routing inbound freight directly to outbound trucks with minimal staging time to shorten lead times and lower handling costs.
- Conduct light preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting of material handling equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors); report mechanical issues to maintenance and follow lockout/tagout procedures when required.
- Train and mentor new hires and temporary staff on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety rules, proper lifting techniques, and WMS transaction flows to accelerate onboarding and maintain quality standards.
- Prepare and maintain accurate documentation for compliance audits, traceability, and customer records, including lot tracking, chain-of-custody logs, and temperature records for cold-chain items.
- Implement process improvement ideas (Kaizen suggestions) to reduce waste, streamline picking paths, optimize slotting, and increase overall operational efficiency; participate in continuous improvement projects.
- Liaise with procurement, customer service, and transportation teams to resolve order exceptions, expedite urgent shipments, and manage backorders, ensuring timely communication and customer satisfaction.
- Follow and enforce all company safety programs, PPE requirements, incident reporting protocols, and participate in regular safety training and tabletop exercises to prevent workplace injuries and minimize risks.
- Assist with seasonal and peak period ramp-ups by supporting temporary labor scheduling, flexible shift coverage, and rapid reconfiguration of work zones to maintain service levels under variable demand.
- Execute tasks related to handling hazardous materials (if applicable) in accordance with MSDS guidelines, DOT rules, and company HAZMAT protocols, including proper storage, labeling, and emergency response steps.
