Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of warehouse associates within a defined zone to achieve daily productivity, accuracy and quality targets while maintaining high morale and engagement.
  • Plan and execute zone-level shift activities including picking, packing, replenishment, staging, loading, and put-away to meet scheduled outbound shipments and inbound receiving windows.
  • Monitor and manage KPIs such as units per hour, order accuracy, on-time shipments, dock-to-stock time, shrink/loss, and labor efficiency; provide daily reporting and corrective action plans.
  • Enforce and model all safety policies, PPE requirements, and OSHA/industry regulations; conduct daily safety huddles, incident investigations, and follow-up to close corrective actions.
  • Schedule and allocate labor within the zone by forecasting demand, adjusting headcount for peak periods, and coordinating with workforce planning or temporary staffing agencies.
  • Train new hires and cross-train existing staff on zone-specific SOPs, proper use of RF scanners, conveyors, pallet jacks and forklifts; maintain training records and competency checklists.
  • Perform regular quality audits and spot checks on orders, merchandise handling, labeling and packaging to minimize errors and customer claims; implement root-cause analysis for recurring defects.
  • Execute and oversee cycle counts and physical inventory activities within the zone to maintain accurate stock levels; investigate variances and reconcile discrepancies in the WMS.
  • Operate or supervise use of material handling equipment safely, ensure certifications are current, and coordinate routine maintenance or repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Implement standard work and continuous improvement ideas (5S, Kaizen) at the zone level to reduce waste, improve throughput, and standardize processes.
  • Escalate operational issues—such as equipment failure, inventory shortages, or capacity constraints—to warehouse management and coordinate cross-functional responses to minimize disruption.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for shipments, receipts, returns, and adjustments; ensure paperwork and electronic records are complete for audit readiness.
  • Manage performance through regular 1:1s, daily feedback, performance reviews and, when necessary, corrective action in partnership with HR to address attendance, safety or performance concerns.
  • Coordinate returns processing, damage handling, and quarantine procedures in accordance with quality and reverse-logistics policies to protect inventory value and compliance.
  • Collaborate with transportation, customer service and production teams to prioritize urgent orders, handle exceptions, and communicate status updates to stakeholders.
  • Ensure zone is staged and prepared for peak events (promotions, seasonal surges) by executing pre-shift setups, material staging, and extra staffing or overtime approvals.
  • Manage labeling, special handling, and documentation for regulated or temperature-sensitive products to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive cost control at the zone level by minimizing overtime, reducing damages, and improving labor productivity through process improvements and accurate workload planning.
  • Implement and maintain security protocols to prevent theft, unauthorized access, and loss of assets; report and investigate security incidents.
  • Support system and WMS change rollouts by validating zone configurations, participating in user acceptance testing, and training staff on new workflows.
  • Lead shift handovers and clear communication between inbound and outbound teams to ensure continuity of operations and prevent mis-ships or missed SLAs.
  • Coordinate temporary assignments and float resources between zones during absences or surges, ensuring consistent coverage and adherence to SOPs.

Secondary Functions

  • Support regular data pull requests and prepare zone-level performance summaries and trend analyses for operations management.
  • Contribute practical zone-level input to continuous improvement initiatives and the organization's operational roadmap.
  • Collaborate with inventory control, quality, and planning teams to translate operational challenges into actionable process improvements.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning meetings, stand-ups and agile-style improvement sprints to prioritize small-scale experiments in the warehouse.
  • Assist with compliance audits, customer audits and third-party inspections by preparing zone documentation and hosting auditors as required.
  • Support ad-hoc projects such as new SKU introductions, slotting optimization, equipment pilots, and layout changes by coordinating zone resources.
  • Maintain up-to-date SOPs, training materials and visual management aids (floor markings, signage) to ensure consistent execution across shifts.
  • Help implement digital tools (WMS, voice pick, RF scanning) at the zone level by acting as a super-user, training peers, and documenting real-world exceptions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Warehouse Management System (WMS) operation and troubleshooting (e.g., Manhattan, Oracle WMS, SAP EWM, JDA).
  • RF scanning and handheld device proficiency for pick/pack/put-away workflows.
  • Forklift operation knowledge and valid certification tracking (counterbalance, reach truck, pallet jack).
  • Strong Excel skills: VLOOKUP, pivot tables, basic formulas for reporting and variance analysis.
  • Experience with shipping/receiving processes, including carrier coordination, ASN/EDI basics, and dock scheduling.
  • Inventory control techniques: cycle counting, physical inventory reconciliation, discrepancy investigation.
  • Familiarity with lean methods (5S, Kaizen) and continuous improvement tools for process optimization.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other relevant safety regulations, including incident reporting and corrective actions.
  • Experience using labor management and productivity tracking tools.
  • Basic knowledge of reverse logistics, returns processing and quarantine flows.
  • Ability to read and interpret production schedules, picking plans and manifest documentation.
  • Experience with performance metrics and KPI dashboards; ability to create concise operational reports.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Management, or Business Administration (preferred but not required).
