Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist route drivers during residential and commercial collection runs by lifting, emptying, and returning bins, roll-offs, carts, and containers while adhering to safe lifting techniques and company ergonomics policies.
  • Operate hand tools, chutes, dollies, and basic material handling equipment to load and secure waste and recyclables on collection vehicles, ensuring balanced loads and safe transport practices.
  • Sort inbound materials at transfer stations and recycling centers according to material type (paper, plastics, metals, organics, electronics), identifying contaminant loads and segregating hazardous materials for proper handling.
  • Follow all site-specific and regulatory procedures when transferring, staging, and disposing of municipal solid waste, construction & demolition debris, and designated recyclable streams.
  • Assist with pickup and placement of bulk items, white goods, mattresses, and appliances; follow protocols for removal of refrigeration units and safe disposal of CFC-containing equipment.
  • Track and document collections, missed pickups, special pickups, and customer requests using onboard mobile devices, route software, or manual logs; update dispatch and customer service teams in real time.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections (visual checks of hydraulic systems, lifting devices, safety lights, and securing chains) and report defects to maintenance for repair to ensure vehicle and route safety.
  • Assist with daily cleaning, decontamination, and maintenance of containers, roll-off boxes, compactors, and collection vehicles to prevent cross-contamination and odor issues.
  • Weigh loads at scale houses and accurately record scale tickets, manifests, and disposal receipts; reconcile paperwork with invoices and route manifests for audit readiness.
  • Follow hazardous waste protocols for identification, segregation, packaging, labeling, and staging of regulated materials; support hazardous materials pick-ups under supervision and in accordance with DOT and EPA guidelines.
  • Maintain and update manifest and chain-of-custody documentation for regulated waste streams, ensuring legal compliance and traceability from pickup through disposal or recycling.
  • Support landfill operations by assisting with daily cover placement, litter control, compaction observation, and directing traffic at working face under supervisor guidance.
  • Participate in emergency response and spill containment activities on site, including the deployment of absorbent materials, booms, and notification of appropriate environmental and safety personnel.
  • Communicate professionally with residents, business customers, and onsite personnel to resolve service issues, explain recycling and disposal rules, and escalate complaints when necessary.
  • Assist with inventory control for consumables and parts (gloves, bags, PPE, straps) and coordinate replenishment requests to ensure teams remain stocked for safe operations.
  • Load and unload materials at transfer stations, recycling facilities, and job sites; support material staging and staging area cleanliness to maintain efficient flow and safety.
  • Support facility environmental monitoring activities such as visual inspections for odors and vectors, documentation of diversion rates, and basic data collection for reporting to environmental compliance teams.
  • Conduct routine site safety checks and contribute to toolbox talks, incident reporting, and near-miss documentation; actively follow and promote OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
  • Assist with community clean-up events, special collections (bulky item days, electronics recycling events), and customer outreach programs to improve diversion and public awareness.
  • Support billing and reconciliation efforts by collecting payment or account information at scalehouses, issuing receipts, and providing customers with required paperwork for commercial and municipal accounts.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist operations staff with ad-hoc data collection and basic reporting related to route efficiency, diversion rates, and customer complaints to support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Help implement departmental waste reduction initiatives such as organics pilot programs, single-stream to multi-stream transitions, and container optimization projects.
  • Participate in safety and training sessions, demonstrating proper PPE usage, lockout/tagout basics, and manual handling techniques to new team members.
  • Provide backup coverage at scalehouses, administrative desks, or customer service points during peak periods or staff absences.
  • Support preventive maintenance by cleaning equipment, lubricating hinges and moving parts, and documenting minor repair needs to improve equipment uptime.
  • Assist environmental compliance teams during audits by gathering requested operational records, manifests, and training logs.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects with dispatch, sales, and environmental services to coordinate special contracts or large commercial accounts requiring tailored service levels.
  • Help maintain signage, labels, and instructional materials at public drop-off sites and transfer stations to improve sorting compliance and reduce contamination.
  • Support recycling education outreach by distributing flyers, answering basic questions at events, and recording participation metrics for municipal partners.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Knowledge of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection and recycling operations, including container types (cart, dumpster, roll-off) and common material streams.
  • Familiarity with DOT regulations for transport of waste and hazardous materials, including proper labeling, placarding basics, and load securement practices.
  • Hazardous waste handling fundamentals and compliance awareness (HAZWOPER concepts, EPA regulations, universal waste rules); experience with packaging and staging hazardous items is a plus.
  • Basic operation of material handling equipment: hand trucks, pallet jacks, hydraulic liftgates, compactors, and basic conveyor systems.
  • Route management and GPS/AVL experience; ability to use mobile route apps, proof-of-service tools, and handheld scanners for data capture.
  • Scalehouse operations and weight ticket processing, including accurate data entry and basic reconciliation for billing and manifests.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for pre-trip inspections, simple diagnostics, and reporting maintenance issues to keep vehicles and equipment safe and operational.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook) and familiar with ERP or CRM systems used for scheduling, dispatch, and customer records.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
