- Safely operate and maneuver a variety of collection vehicles and equipment, including rear-loaders, side-loaders, front-loaders, roll-off trucks, and compactors, following vehicle-specific operating procedures and local traffic laws.
- Manually lift, empty, and secure garbage bags, curbside cans, and commercial dumpsters into compactors or truck hoppers using proper lifting techniques and PPE to prevent injury and reduce damage to property.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, documenting defects, low fluids, tire issues, and safety hazards, and escalate maintenance needs to the fleet or shop supervisor.
- Follow established safety protocols and OSHA guidelines for handling potentially hazardous materials and sharps, segregating suspicious loads, and using spill containment and decontamination procedures when required.
- Load, secure, and transport collected waste to designated transfer stations, processing facilities, landfills, or recycling centers, ensuring compliance with local disposal regulations and chain-of-custody practices.
- Sort and separate recyclables from general waste at curbside or at collection vehicles, educating residents when necessary about proper separation and contamination avoidance to optimize diversion rates.
- Report and document missed collections, illegal dumping, service complaints, damage to customer property, and hazardous conditions using required forms, route boards, or mobile reporting apps in a timely manner.
- Provide courteous, professional customer service during curbside interactions, listening to resident concerns, explaining collection policies, and escalating complex disputes to supervisors.
- Assist with special pickup programs such as bulk-item collection, seasonal yard waste pickups, electronic waste (e-waste) collections, and hazardous household waste events, following additional handling requirements.
- Perform routine cleaning of trucks and work areas, removing debris, compacted waste buildup, and spills to maintain sanitary and safe conditions on the vehicle and at transfer points.
- Participate in routine safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions on hazardous materials handling, bloodborne pathogen awareness, correct PPE usage, lockout/tagout procedures, and defensive driving.
- Maintain accurate route logs, load tickets, and disposal manifests; enter or update digital route completion data in mobile devices or dispatch systems when required for compliance and billing.
- Follow company and municipal ordinances regarding proper handling and disposal of regulated wastes, including asbestos, certain e-waste components, batteries, and otherwise prohibited materials, and report suspect loads immediately.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new crew members, demonstrating safe lifting practices, route best practices, and customer interaction protocols to build a consistent, safety-first culture.
- Execute emergency response support duties when needed (storm cleanup, flood debris collection, snow and ice removal from municipal collection points), coordinating with emergency management and public works teams.
- Inspect customer containers, alleys, and dumpster pads for safety hazards, rodent infestation, or structural issues and document conditions that could impede safe collection or contaminate recyclables.
- Apply basic troubleshooting for minor mechanical issues — securing loose components, checking fluid levels, and assisting mechanics with on-site repairs to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Ensure proper separation, labeling, and containment of hazardous or special waste streams encountered during routes, following protocols for secure transport and notification to supervisors.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying recurring route problems, proposing efficiency improvements, and collaborating with route planning to optimize collection schedules and fuel usage.
- Enforce workplace conduct, dress, and PPE requirements while on public property, model professional behavior in neighborhoods and business districts, and support public outreach efforts to increase compliance with collection programs.
- Load and unload collection equipment at transfer stations or compactors safely, collaborating with transfer station operators to maintain throughput and operational flow.
- Adhere to weight limits and vehicle loading best practices, ensuring safe center of gravity, proper distribution of materials, and avoidance of overloads to reduce vehicle damage and safety risks.
Secondary Functions
- Support periodic inventory checks for PPE, tools, and vehicle supplies, notifying supervisors when stock levels are low.
- Assist administrative staff with documentation for incident reports, worker’s compensation forms, and claims related to collection operations.
- Contribute to route efficiency studies and pilot programs (e.g., automated collection or new recycling streams) by providing field feedback and practical observations.
- Participate in community outreach, educational events, and resident-safety programs to promote proper waste and recycling practices.
- Help maintain signage, bins, and containment areas at recycling centers or transfer stations, including cleaning, minor repairs, and placement adjustments.
- Support special projects such as paint and tire amnesty days, compost giveaways, and neighborhood cleanup events.
- Help collect data for sustainability and diversion reporting by recording contamination rates, tonnages, and unusually hazardous materials found during pickups.
- Assist with seasonal tasks such as leaf collection, storm debris pickup, and snow/ice management at collection points, coordinating with seasonal crews as needed.
