The Watch Designer is a cross-disciplinary product design role responsible for developing compelling, manufacturable timepieces from first concept through production launch. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead concept development and visual storytelling for new watch collections: craft mood boards, design language, and concept sketches that align with brand positioning and target consumer insights across luxury and contemporary markets.
  • Produce detailed 2D and 3D technical drawings for cases, dials, hands, crowns, pushers, and integrated bracelets, ensuring manufacturability and tolerance compliance using CAD tools such as Rhino, SolidWorks or similar.
  • Specify and document movement requirements — select or design movements, define complications (date, GMT, chronograph, tourbillon), recommend calibers, and determine aesthetic and technical finishing standards for movement components.
  • Create and maintain complete Bills of Materials (BOM) and engineering change documentation (ECO/ECN) for each model, including material specifications, finishes, part numbers, and supplier references.
  • Develop rapid prototypes and mock-ups (3D printed models, CNC machined parts, brass dummies) to validate design intent, ergonomics, wearability, and visual proportions prior to tooling.
  • Drive DFM/DFM-A (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) reviews with production engineers and suppliers to reduce complexity, optimize tolerances, and lower unit cost without compromising design integrity.
  • Manage external suppliers and ateliers — source case makers, dial manufacturers, hands suppliers, strap and bracelet vendors, and finishing specialists; qualify vendors and coordinate sample cycles.
  • Oversee finishing and surface treatment specifications (brushing, polishing, PVD, DLC, sandblasting, lacquer, enamel, guilloché), ensuring repeatable execution and documented quality standards.
  • Define and enforce dimensional and cosmetic tolerances, GD&T rules, and acceptance criteria for prototypes and first production runs; lead in-house and supplier quality inspections.
  • Collaborate with watchmakers and movement engineers to resolve technical integration issues, ensuring reliable assembly and serviceability, including adjustments for movement height, stem/crown alignment, and case sealing.
  • Create high-fidelity renderings and marketing-ready visuals (KeyShot, Blender, or equivalent) for internal approvals, sales kits, e-commerce, and launch campaigns.
  • Participate in test planning and validation: water resistance testing, shock and vibration testing, temperature cycling, magnetic resistance planning, and long-term reliability validation in partnership with QA.
  • Lead prototype iteration cycles: review sample feedback, compile defect lists, prioritize corrective actions, and close design-to-production gaps until pre-series sign-off.
  • Prepare and present design reviews and technical documentation to cross-functional stakeholders (marketing, supply chain, production, after-sales), articulating tradeoffs between aesthetics, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Maintain and evolve product line architecture and modularity to increase platform reuse, accelerate time-to-market, and create scale efficiencies across collections.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and certification requirements relevant to watches (water resistance standards, battery/chemical handling, export controls for precious metals) and maintain records for audits.
  • Mentor junior designers and apprentices on sketching, CAD best practices, prototype evaluation, and manufacturer communication to build internal design capability.
  • Protect intellectual property by documenting innovative technical features and coordinating with legal on patent filings or design registrations as needed.
  • Monitor competitive market, material and finishing trends, and consumer behavior to inform creative direction and product roadmap decisions.
  • Coordinate launch readiness for production ramp-up, including tooling approval, first article inspections (FAI), packaging interface, and after-sales service documentation.
  • Work closely with sustainability, procurement, and materials teams to evaluate eco-friendly materials, supplier certifications, and lifecycle impacts for responsible sourcing strategies.
  • Track project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation; proactively identify risks and mitigation plans to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of new models.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide ad-hoc technical support to sales, marketing, and after-sales teams for product inquiries, bespoke commissions, and client presentations.
  • Contribute to merchandising and packaging design reviews to ensure cohesive unboxing experiences and accurate dielines for watch boxes and warranty cards.
  • Maintain the design library: CAD models, approved drawings, color palettes, texture maps, and photography assets to accelerate future projects and preserve IP.
  • Participate in trade shows, product exhibitions, and media events to represent design intent and support commercial storytelling.
  • Coordinate small-batch or limited-edition production runs, including bespoke customization and personalization workflows.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives on the production floor by analyzing defects, root-cause investigations, and implementing corrective design solutions.
  • Assist procurement in negotiating technical terms and price points with suppliers to balance design quality and margin requirements.
  • Lead or participate in cross-functional workshops to ideate new product concepts, price ladders, and brand collaborations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in CAD and 3D modeling tools commonly used in watch design (Rhino, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor); ability to create manufacturable parts and assemblies.
  • Experience with rendering and visualization tools (KeyShot, Blender, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator) to produce realistic product imagery and technical illustrations.
  • Strong understanding of horology: mechanical and quartz movements, complications, movement architecture, and assembly constraints.
  • Knowledge of micro-mechanics, tolerance analysis, GD&T, and preparing manufacturing drawings and specifications for precision parts.
  • Experience developing and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering change orders (ECOs), and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
  • Proficiency in prototyping techniques: CNC machining, 3D printing, wax and brass dummies, and finishing mock-ups.
  • Familiarity with surface treatments and coating technologies (PVD, DLC, electroplating, lacquer, enameling) and how they affect durability and aesthetics.
  • Quality assurance and testing knowledge: water resistance, shock testing, environmental testing, and first article inspection methodologies.
  • Supplier management and vendor qualification experience with case, dial, hands, movement and strap manufacturers.
  • Understanding of tooling, injection molding, stamping, and metalworking processes as they relate to cases, bracelets and clasps.
  • Basic knowledge of materials science relevant to watchmaking: stainless steels, titanium, precious metals, ceramics, sapphire, and composite materials.
  • Experience preparing technical files for compliance, certifications, and IP protection (design patents, trademarks).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in watchmaking/horology.

Preferred Education:

  • Formal horology certification (WOSTEP, CETEHOR, British Horological Institute) or a Master’s degree in Product Design/Materials Science.
  • Continued education or short courses in CAD rendering, precision engineering, or jewelry/metal finishing.
