Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, design, and implement routine and special-purpose water quality monitoring programs for surface water, groundwater, stormwater, and wastewater to meet organizational objectives and regulatory requirements (e.g., NPDES, SDWA, TMDL monitoring).
  • Conduct field sampling of physical, chemical, and biological parameters (e.g., pH, DO, conductivity, nutrients, metals, fecal indicator bacteria, HABs) using standardized protocols and maintain detailed chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Prepare sampling plans, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) tailored to project scope, site conditions, and permit requirements.
  • Oversee and coordinate sample handling, preservation, and delivery to contract or in-house laboratories, ensuring proper containers, preservatives, holding times, and QA/QC samples (blanks, duplicates, spikes).
  • Perform on-site instrument calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation for field sensors and probes (multiparameter sondes, pH/DO meters, turbidity meters) to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
  • Lead or support laboratory analyses, including spectrophotometry, ion chromatography, ICP-MS/ICP-OES, and microbial methods (IDEXX, membrane filtration), and verify analytical results against QA/QC acceptance criteria.
  • Collect, validate, and manage water quality datasets; perform statistical analyses, trend detection, and data visualization using tools such as R, Python, Excel, or specialized environmental software.
  • Interpret water quality data in the context of regulatory standards (e.g., state water quality standards, MCLs, permit limits) and provide technical guidance on exceedances, data qualification, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare technical reports, monitoring summaries, permit submittals, and regulatory correspondence that clearly present methods, results, trends, and management recommendations for clients, regulators, and stakeholders.

  • Maintain field safety programs and ensure compliance with site-specific safety plans, PPE requirements, confined space entry, HAZWOPER protocols, and boat/ATV safety when applicable.
  • Manage, train, and supervise field crews, contractors, and interns; develop training materials and ensure consistent application of methods and QA/QC procedures.
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain continuous monitoring equipment (real-time sondes, telemetry, dataloggers, SCADA interfaces); monitor data streams for anomalies and coordinate maintenance with vendors.
  • Support laboratory quality systems and accreditation activities (e.g., ELAP, ISO 17025), participate in audits, and implement corrective actions to maintain analytical integrity.
  • Prepare and support grant applications, project proposals, and budgets related to water quality monitoring, restoration, and research initiatives.
  • Lead community outreach, public education, and stakeholder engagement efforts to communicate monitoring results, promote source-water protection, and facilitate collaborative watershed solutions.
  • Design and run water quality modeling exercises (e.g., QUAL2K, SWMM, HSPF, SWAT) to predict pollutant fate and transport, evaluate management scenarios, and support decision-making.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
