Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide operational short-, medium-, and long-range weather forecasts and warnings (hourly to seasonal) tailored to client operations, integrating deterministic (GFS, ECMWF, NAM) and ensemble model guidance (GEFS, ECMWF ensembles), and clearly communicating forecast confidence and uncertainty.
  • Conduct severe-weather monitoring and real-time advisory services, issuing actionable alerts and updates for thunderstorms, tornadoes, extreme precipitation, flooding, high winds, and winter storms to support client safety and continuity plans.
  • Develop and run high-resolution numerical weather prediction experiments (WRF / WRF-Hydro / HARMONIE or equivalent), calibrate model physics and post-process outputs to improve local forecast skill for clients with critical operations.
  • Analyze and interpret remote sensing data (radar reflectivity and velocity, dual-polarization products, satellite imagery, LiDAR) to detect mesoscale features and provide rapid situational awareness during hazardous events.
  • Perform hydrometeorological and flood risk assessments using observed streamflow, precipitation analyses, and rainfall-runoff models to support infrastructure planning, emergency management, and insurance claims.
  • Produce climate and trend analyses (climatology, extreme value analysis, return period estimates) to quantify long-term exposure and support resilience planning, regulatory compliance, and asset siting decisions.
  • Create bespoke risk products (wind risk maps, icing risk, convective initiation probability, coastal inundation scenarios) and integrate these into dashboards, decision support systems, or operational SOPs for client use.
  • Translate meteorological insights into business impact assessments, loss avoidance estimates, and operational recommendations for sectors such as energy (wind/solar forecasting), aviation (ATO dispatch and airport operations), marine (voyage planning), and agriculture (frost/heat advisories).
  • Lead and manage weather consulting projects from proposal to delivery: scope requirements, produce SOWs, schedule milestones, estimate resource needs, and ensure technical and contractual compliance.
  • Produce high-quality technical reports, client briefings, executive summaries, and technical annexes that clearly articulate methodology, assumptions, limitations, and recommended actions.
  • Design, implement, and maintain automated forecast pipelines and APIs that ingest model and observational data, apply post-processing, and distribute tailored forecast products to clients and operational teams.
  • Perform model verification and forecast performance monitoring (bias, RMSE, CRPS) and iterate on forecasting methods using statistical post-processing, machine learning calibration, and ensemble interpretation to continuously improve service accuracy.
  • Integrate meteorological data into GIS systems and spatial analyses to support route planning, emergency response, and asset exposure mapping, producing map-based products suitable for stakeholder decision-making.
  • Support field campaigns and on-site assessments: deploy temporary instrumentation, coordinate observational networks, and supervise in-situ data collection for model validation and client-specific studies.
  • Provide training, workshops, and tabletop exercises for client operational teams on weather awareness, SOPs, and how to interpret probabilistic forecasts and warning products.
  • Liaise with government meteorological agencies (e.g., NOAA, Met Offices) and industry stakeholders to maintain situational awareness of official warnings, aviation products (SIGMETs, METARs, TAFs), and regulatory requirements impacting client operations.
  • Maintain and curate meteorological databases: quality control observations, maintain time-series integrity, document metadata, and ensure data provenance for auditability in regulatory or insurance contexts.
  • Advise on instrumentation and observing-system procurement (weather stations, wind lidar, ceilometers) and support installation, calibration, and ongoing maintenance planning to ensure reliable local observations.
  • Support business development activities: prepare technical content for proposals and bids, present capabilities in client-facing meetings, and synthesize case studies that demonstrate ROI and risk reduction achieved by weather services.
  • Implement and document QA/QC procedures for forecast products and data processing pipelines, ensuring reproducibility and meeting client SLAs for timeliness and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and data scientists to operationalize ML-driven nowcasting and demand-forecasting products, including feature engineering, model monitoring, and feedback loops with domain experts.
  • Provide regulatory and compliance support by interpreting weather-related regulations, preparing technical attachments for permits, and supporting environmental impact assessments where weather plays a factor.
  • Monitor and evaluate emerging science and technology (new satellite platforms, doppler networks, nowcasting algorithms) and recommend adoption strategies to keep client services state-of-the-art.
