Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and apply engineering drawings, welding symbols and welding procedure specifications (WPS) to accurately set up and execute welds that meet dimensional tolerances, fit-up requirements, and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform high-quality MIG (GMAW) welding on a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, adjusting machine parameters, wire feed speeds, and gas flow to control penetration and bead appearance.
  • Execute TIG (GTAW) welds for precision joints and critical assemblies, maintaining appropriate tungsten selection, gas purity, amperage control and heat input to prevent warping and contamination.
  • Carry out SMAW (stick) welding for structural and maintenance applications, including electrode selection, proper arc strike/strike-off technique, and adherence to preheat/post-heat instructions when specified.
  • Operate flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) equipment to join thick sections and heavy assemblies while monitoring slag control, spatter reduction and weld profile.
  • Prepare parts for welding through layout, tack welding, grinding, beveling, and fit-up, ensuring correct root gaps, alignment and clamp-up to minimize rework.
  • Set up and operate welding positioners, manipulators, and fixtures to maintain weld consistency and ergonomics across repetitive production runs.
  • Maintain welding machines, torches, cables, and gas systems by performing daily preventive checks, replacing consumables, and logging maintenance actions to prevent downtime.
  • Perform in-process inspection and non-destructive examination support including visual inspection, dye penetrant (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT) or assisting with ultrasonic (UT) testing as required to verify weld integrity.
  • Document weld parameters, material lot numbers, WPS references, and inspection results in production travelers, weld logs or electronic quality systems to maintain traceability and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Follow and enforce site safety rules, lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, and safe handling of compressed gases, fumes and hot work permits to protect self and co-workers.
  • Troubleshoot welding defects such as porosity, lack of fusion, cracking and distortion by diagnosing root causes and implementing corrective actions or process changes.
  • Support first-article builds and prototype welds by collaborating with engineers to qualify WPS changes, perform sample test coupons, and iterate until production-ready procedures are established.
  • Meet daily production quotas and takt times while balancing quality standards by managing time, optimizing weld sequences, and coordinating with material handlers and QA inspectors.
  • Train and mentor junior welders and apprentices on best practices, shop standards, welding techniques and quality expectations to raise overall team capability.
  • Operate handheld cutting tools, plasma cutters or oxy-fuel torches for part preparation and trim operations ensuring accurate edge conditions for weld joints.
  • Apply finishing operations such as grinding, blending and touch-up welding to achieve specified surface finish, dimensional tolerances and paint/coat readiness.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives by suggesting process improvements, fixture redesigns and waste reduction ideas that increase throughput and reduce rework.
  • Adhere to customer-specific quality systems (ISO 9001, ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, etc.), complete required documentation, and support internal/external audits with factual evidence of compliance.
  • Coordinate with production planning to identify material shortages, tooling needs and schedule impacts; provide realistic time estimates and escalate issues to supervisors when required.
  • Safely move and stage heavy components using forklifts, hoists and rigging gear, following load charts and rigging procedures to prevent damage to parts and injury.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure all consumables and spare parts are stocked, labeled and accessible to support uninterrupted production flow.
  • Implement best practice heat control strategies including preheat, interpass temperature control and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) coordination to meet metallurgical and stress-relief requirements.
  • Demonstrate and maintain welding certifications as required by the employer or customer (e.g., AWS welder qualification) and participate in requalification tests on schedule.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist engineering and quality teams with root-cause analysis by providing hands-on observations from the shop floor and participating in corrective action implementation.
  • Support kaizen events and production line balancing by offering practical insights on cycle time reductions, fixture improvements and ergonomic adjustments.
  • Cross-train on adjacent fabrication operations (cutting, CNC plasma, bending) to provide production flexibility during peak workloads or absenteeism.
  • Help maintain parts inventory accuracy by labeling completed assemblies, returning scrap to designated containers and reporting discrepancies to warehouse personnel.
  • Participate in workstation tool calibration checks (weld gauges, calipers, thermometers) and ensure measurement tools are within tolerance.
  • Provide input to procurement on preferred consumables, electrode types and shielding gases based on shop experience to help optimize cost and quality.
  • Assist in collecting data for weld process capability studies and SPC charts to support continuous improvement and quality assurance metrics.
  • Facilitate safe handover between shifts by completing clear shift reports, documenting ongoing work, and briefing the next shift on critical issues or pending inspections.
  • Support customer visit preparation and demonstration builds by ensuring show-piece welds meet visual and dimensional expectations.
  • Participate in mentorship programs and training class development to standardize best practices and reduce onboarding time for new hires.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in MIG (GMAW) welding for production and repair on carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
  • Skilled in TIG (GTAW) welding for precision, thin-gauge and critical welds with proper tungsten selection and shielding gas control.
  • Experienced with SMAW (stick) and FCAW processes including electrode/wire selection, amperage settings and slag removal.
  • Solid blueprint reading and interpretation of welding symbols, tolerances, GD&T basics and assembly drawings.
  • Knowledgeable in welding procedure specifications (WPS) and welder performance qualification per AWS and ASME standards.

  • Hands-on experience with weld documentation: weld logs, material traceability, traveler's completion and first-article paperwork.
  • Understanding of metallurgical effects of heat input, preheat/post-heat procedures, and distortion control techniques.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance on welding machines, torches and gas delivery systems.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing concepts, 5S shop organization, and continuous improvement practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED; vocational or technical school coursework in welding or metal fabrication preferred.

Preferred Education:

Certificate or diploma from an accredited Welding Technology program; AWS or similar industry certifications; apprenticeship completion.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1–5 years of hands-on welding experience in a production or fabrication shop environment.

Preferred: 3–7+ years of progressive welding experience with demonstrated competency across multiple processes (MIG, TIG, SMAW, FCAW) and documented welder qualifications per AWS/ASME. Previous experience in certified manufacturing environments (ISO, ASME) or with robotic welding cells is a plus.
