Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform thorough visual inspections and dimensional verification of welds, weld preparations, and welded assemblies in accordance with project specifications and codes (ASME Section VIII, B31.3, AWS D1.1, API standards), documenting compliance and deviations in detailed inspection reports.
- Review, interpret and enforce Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ/WPQ), ensuring that procedures and welder qualifications are valid and applicable to the work being performed.
- Plan, schedule and oversee non-destructive testing (NDT/NDE) activities — including ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and liquid penetrant testing (PT) — ensuring testing methods, acceptance criteria and equipment calibrations meet client and code requirements.
- Accept or reject welds and welded assemblies based on objective inspection criteria and NDE results; issue and track corrective actions, stop-work notices and nonconformance reports (NCRs) until satisfactory disposition.
- Perform welding process audits and shop inspections across subcontractors and vendors to verify compliance with contractual quality expectations, fabrication tolerances, and code requirements; provide clear, prioritized corrective guidance to trades.
- Maintain detailed inspection records, inspection logs, weld maps and traceability documentation for materials, heat numbers and consumables; prepare daily and weekly inspection summaries for project stakeholders and inspectors.
- Conduct pre-weld and post-weld inspections including joint fit-up, root gap, alignment, tack weld integrity, weld profile, undercut, porosity and reinforcement measurements; confirm adherence to specified root openings and filler metal selection.
- Verify heat treatment processes (preheat, interpass temperature, post-weld heat treatment) are being performed, monitored and recorded per PQR and procedure requirements; ensure thermocouple placement and temperature logs are accurate.
- Coordinate and verify calibration and certification status of inspection and NDT equipment; maintain logbooks for gauges, UT machines, radiography film/digital equipment, and other test instruments to ensure traceability and accuracy.
- Work closely with welding supervisors, engineers and project managers to provide technical input on welding strategy, constructability, and risk mitigation; recommend design or process changes to improve quality and reduce rework.
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring weld defects, lead troubleshooting sessions with production and NDT teams, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to address process weaknesses.
- Carry out painting and coating inspections related to welded items — verify surface preparation, coating thickness and holiday testing when applicable — to assure post-weld corrosion protection meets specifications.
- Review and approve weld repair procedures and supervise weld repairs to ensure repaired joints meet original code and specification requirements; document repair welds and re-inspections thoroughly.
- Lead pre-fabrication and pre-inspection meetings with vendors and site teams to align on quality expectations, inspection hold points and documentation deliverables required for project acceptance.
- Ensure safe work practices are followed during welding and inspection activities; identify and report unsafe conditions, enforce hot work controls, and participate in safety and permit-to-work processes.
- Verify material certifications (MTCs) and mill test reports for base metals and filler materials, confirm correct material grade, and ensure positive material identification (PMI) where required.
- Support pre-shipment and final inspection activities including witness testing, packing and marking verification, and generate release documentation for client acceptance.
- Prepare and present clear, timely inspection reports, photographic evidence and punch lists to clients and internal stakeholders; maintain a complete audit trail for all inspection decisions.
- Provide on-the-job mentoring and training to junior inspectors, welders and QA staff on welding acceptance criteria, inspection techniques and documentation best practices to raise overall site quality levels.
- Participate in supplier qualification activities, vendor audits and capability assessments to verify vendor welding processes, quality systems and resource competence prior to work commencement.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable welding standards, code revisions and industry best practices, and implement changes into inspection checklists and site procedures.
Secondary Functions
- Support project handover and quality close-out packages by compiling inspection records, NDT reports, MTCs and NCR dispositions into structured deliverables for client sign-off.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives by capturing inspection data trends, defect metrics and contributing to quality improvement workshops and lessons-learned sessions.
- Coordinate with procurement and engineering to control nonconforming materials, quarantine processes and vendor corrective actions when materials or consumables do not meet specification.
- Participate in internal and external quality audits, provide evidence of inspection controls, and support audit remediation activities.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential (AWS) or equivalent (CSWIP 3.1) strongly preferred.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical diploma or trade school in welding technology, fabrication or inspection preferred.
