Primary Functions

  • Set, square, shim and anchor frames to structural openings, secure fasteners to framed studs or substrate per manufacturer and code requirements, and verify structural integrity of mounting points.
  • Install glazing and glass units, seal glass stops and glazing beads, remove glazing compounds as required, and handle insulated glass units with proper care to avoid breakage and seal failure.
  • Apply flashing, backer rods, high-performance sealants and continuous air/vapor barriers to create a weatherproof and energy-efficient window and door installation that meets local building codes and NFRC/ENERGY STAR guidelines.
  • Adjust door hardware (hinges, closers, locks, deadbolts, multipoint locking systems) and window balances so doors and sashes operate smoothly, meet security standards and maintain proper clearances.
  • Cut, fit and install interior and exterior trim, jamb extensions, sills and casings; perform on-site carpentry modifications to frame conditions for custom openings.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, shop drawings and installation manuals; follow detail callouts and coordinate with general contractors, framers and site supervisors to align scopes and schedules.
  • Perform finish work including sanding, minor carpentry repair, color-matching and caulking between frames and cladding, ensuring a clean, finished appearance that satisfies customers and site requirements.
  • Troubleshoot installation issues such as out-of-square openings, rotted jambs, uneven substrates, or failed hardware; recommend and implement corrective actions or alternative installation methods.
  • Use power tools (saws, drills, routers), hand tools (levels, squares, pry bars) and specialized equipment (sash jacks, vacuum suction cups, lifting rigs) safely and maintain tools in good working order.
  • Follow job-site safety protocols, use fall protection and PPE, maintain tidy work areas, and ensure all safety documentation and incident reports are current and accurate.
  • Coordinate delivery, staging and secure storage of windows, doors and hardware on-site; inspect incoming materials for damage and verify components against purchase orders.
  • Complete daily installation logs, inspection checklists, warranty tags and customer sign-offs; take and upload “before and after” photos to project management systems as required.
  • Provide clear, professional communication to homeowners and property managers, explain operation and maintenance requirements for installed products, and document any onsite customer preferences or special requests.
  • Perform routine service calls and warranty repairs, diagnose operational complaints (air/water infiltration, hardware failure, fogging) and complete corrective work to manufacturer standards.
  • Train and mentor junior installers, apprentices and helpers on installation best practices, safe tool operation and quality control checks to maintain consistent workmanship across crews.
  • Estimate time, labor and material needs for installation tasks when assisting the estimator or project manager; provide feedback on field conditions that impact schedules and budgets.
  • Adhere to local building codes, energy efficiency programs and manufacturer installation requirements; participate in inspections with building officials when applicable.
  • Lift, carry and maneuver heavy windows and door units safely (often up to 75 lbs or more with mechanical assistance), rig materials for hoisting to upper floors, and work on ladders, scaffolds or lifts as required by project scope.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of small parts, sealants, fasteners and hardware; request restocks proactively to avoid installation delays.

  • Collaborate with estimating and project management to provide detailed field feedback on product fit, lead times and change orders.
