The Wireless Engineer is a technically driven telecommunications professional responsible for designing, deploying, optimizing and validating wireless radio access networks (RAN) across technologies such as LTE, 5G NR, Wi‑Fi and IoT LPWAN. This role combines RF planning, network integration, performance optimization, hands‑on field validation (site surveys and drive tests), vendor coordination, and automation to deliver dependable, scalable wireless services. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end‑to‑end radio access network (RAN) design and deployment activities, producing detailed RF designs, link budgets, coverage maps and capacity plans for LTE, 5G NR and Wi‑Fi projects to meet business and SLA requirements.
  • Perform propagation modeling and path loss analysis using industry tools (Atoll, Planet, Mentum, RanPlan) to predict coverage and optimize cell layout, antenna patterns and tilt configurations for urban, suburban and rural environments.
  • Execute comprehensive site surveys and feasibility assessments, including drive tests, indoor walk tests and on‑site antenna placement validation, to translate theoretical designs into practical installation plans.
  • Conduct RF and network performance optimization by analyzing KPIs (handovers, RSRP/RSRQ/SINR, throughput, call drop rates) and implementing parameter tuning, carrier aggregation and interference mitigation strategies to improve user experience.
  • Plan and validate capacity and dimensioning for network growth, performing traffic modeling, cell splitting, sectorization and spectrum re‑use analysis to ensure scalable, cost‑effective deployments.
  • Design and specify antenna systems, feeders and RF front‑end components including antenna selection, RSA calculations, azimuth/elevation tilt settings, MIMO configurations and beamforming parameters to maximize spectral efficiency.
  • Coordinate with vendors (Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, CommScope and system integrators) to define technical requirements, oversee software/hardware integration, manage acceptance testing and resolve escalation tickets during deployment phases.
  • Lead integration testing with core network elements (MME/AMF, EPC/5GC, IMS), transport (MPLS, DWDM) and backhaul links to validate end‑to‑end service delivery and troubleshoot interworking issues across RAN and core domains.
  • Design and implement RF interference analysis and mitigation plans, including inter‑cell interference coordination (ICIC/eICIC), dynamic spectrum sharing, and filtering for co‑existence with other services and incumbent users.
  • Manage spectrum planning and coordination activities, ensuring regulatory compliance with national authorities, preparing filings for frequency allocation, and implementing guard bands and channelization strategies.
  • Perform over‑the‑air (OTA) and laboratory testing of RF subsystems using drive test tools (TEMs, Nemo, Rohde & Schwarz) and lab equipment (spectrum analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers) to validate performance against specifications.
  • Develop automated test scripts and data pipelines (Python, MATLAB, Bash) to collect, process and visualize RF KPI data, accelerating troubleshooting and supporting machine learning‑driven optimization initiatives.
  • Create detailed technical documentation including network design packages, BOMs, as‑built drawings, site installation guides, operations runbooks and test reports for handover to operations teams.
  • Manage project milestones and technical scope for site builds and upgrades, coordinating civil, power, RF, transport and IT teams to ensure on‑time, on‑budget delivery and quality compliance.
  • Support rollout planning and cost optimization by evaluating multi‑technology co‑location options, passive infrastructure reuse, and evaluating trade‑offs between macro, small cell and indoor DAS solutions.
  • Lead root‑cause investigations for major incidents and customer escalations, forming cross‑functional war rooms, performing deep packet and RF traces, and implementing corrective actions to remediate service degradation.
  • Participate in antenna alignment and onsite commissioning activities, validating azimuth, tilt and cable routing, and verifying RAN parameters after tower climbs or rooftop installations.
  • Drive continuous improvement of network performance through proactive KPI monitoring, predictive capacity forecasting and targeted RF campaigns to reduce churn and increase average revenue per user (ARPU).
  • Contribute to product and feature development for advanced wireless capabilities (Massive MIMO, network slicing, URLLC, NB‑IoT, eMBB/URLLC enhancements), collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver commercial services.
  • Ensure rigorous safety, quality and compliance practices on all field activities, enforcing RF exposure limits, tower safety, permit requirements and environmental constraints.
  • Mentor junior RF engineers and field technicians, providing technical leadership, review of designs and hands‑on training in drive testing, propagation modeling and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Evaluate and pilot new tools and methodologies (AI/ML for KPI prediction, software‑defined radios, virtual RAN) to keep the wireless portfolio current and competitive in evolving 4G/5G/6G landscapes.
  • Prepare and present clear technical proposals and status reports to stakeholders, translating complex RF engineering concepts into business impact and ROI for executive decision‑making.
  • Support post‑deployment optimization and lifecycle management including software upgrades, parameter harmonization, and periodic RF audits to maintain peak network performance.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Drive Test & Field Validation: Hands‑on experience with TEMS, Nemo, Rohde & Schwarz, Keysight and other drive/walk test tools for KPI collection and troubleshooting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.

Preferred Education:
Master's degree in Telecommunications, Wireless Communications, RF Engineering, or an MBA for senior/managerial roles.
