Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Recruit, screen, and enroll participants for yoga research studies by applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, conducting medical and activity-history interviews, and obtaining informed consent in accordance with IRB-approved procedures.
  • Coordinate and schedule study visits, manage participant communications and follow-ups, and maintain excellent retention through adherence to study timelines and participant-centered protocols.
  • Set up, calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot biomechanical and physiological measurement systems including motion-capture (Vicon, OptiTrack), synchronized force plates, electromyography (EMG), inertial measurement units (IMUs), and metabolic carts to ensure high-quality raw data collection.
  • Lead standardized yoga protocol delivery in lab and studio settings by demonstrating poses, cueing breath and movement, and monitoring participant safety and compliance with movement/pose fidelity.
  • Implement multi-modal data acquisition workflows (video, marker trajectories, analog signals, heart rate, respiration) with precise time synchronization and metadata capture to enable reproducible downstream analysis.
  • Perform on-site physiological assessments such as blood pressure, heart-rate variability (HRV), pulse oximetry, spirometry, and body composition measurements with established protocols and infection-control procedures.
  • Prepare and maintain experimental spaces, yoga props, and lab equipment; perform routine preventative maintenance, document calibration logs, order replacement parts and consumables, and coordinate technical service when required.
  • Execute standardized electrode placement and signal quality checks for surface EMG, process raw EMG signals (filtering, rectification, normalization), and collaborate with analysts to extract muscle activation metrics relevant to yoga postures.
  • Conduct biomechanical data processing including marker labeling, gap filling, filtering, inverse kinematics/kinetics, and creation of derived variables (joint angles, center-of-mass, moment arms) using software such as Visual3D, OpenSim, or custom MATLAB/Python scripts.
  • Manage digital and physical data assets: organize files, apply consistent naming conventions and metadata, perform secure backups, and maintain compliance with data-sharing policies, HIPAA and institutional data governance.
  • Build and maintain REDCap/Qualtrics databases, enter clinical and survey data, perform data quality checks, and generate export-ready datasets for statistical analysis in R, Python, SPSS, or SAS.
  • Administer validated patient-reported outcome measures, behavioral surveys, and cognitive assessments relevant to yoga intervention studies, ensuring standardized delivery and scoring.
  • Support biospecimen collection protocols (saliva, dried blood spots) where applicable: follow biosafety procedures, label and store samples correctly, and coordinate shipping to core labs.
  • Assist with IRB submissions, amendments, and adverse event reporting by preparing protocol documentation, drafting consent form language, and maintaining study regulatory binders.
  • Implement participant safety monitoring procedures during stress-inducing or physically demanding protocols, recognize signs of distress, and activate emergency response or referral procedures according to lab policy.
  • Conduct pilot testing and feasibility assessments for new measurement setups, iteratively adapt protocols for ecological validity in studio-based yoga, and document SOPs for reproducibility.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate assistants, externs, and visiting researchers on protocol execution, equipment use, participant interactions, and data-handling best practices to maintain high study fidelity.
  • Perform preliminary statistical summaries and visualization of pilot and study data (descriptive stats, time-series plots), prepare figures for team meetings, and translate technical results into clear summaries for interdisciplinary collaborators.
  • Draft methods sections, technical appendices, and materials for grants, IRB narratives, and manuscripts; prepare standardized logs and lab notebooks to support auditing and publication reproducibility.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in human-subjects research, yoga-science literature, wearable sensor validation, and software tools; recommend methodological improvements to optimize data quality and participant experience.
  • Coordinate logistics for community-based data collection (off-site studios, clinics), transport portable equipment safely, set up temporary measurement environments, and ensure fidelity to the original lab protocol in field settings.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional safety, biohazard, and infection-control policies, and enforce appropriate PPE, equipment sterilization, and participant hygiene practices for contact-based measurements.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
