  • Assist the yoga therapist in creating individualized therapeutic yoga plans that integrate movement practices, breathwork (pranayama), guided relaxation, and supported restorative postures tailored to each client's medical and functional needs.
  • Lead or co-facilitate one-on-one and small group therapeutic yoga sessions under the direction of a licensed yoga therapist, modifying postures and sequences for injuries, mobility limitations, pregnancy, chronic pain, or neurological conditions.
  • Demonstrate safe alignment cues, adaptive aids and prop set-ups (bolsters, blocks, straps, chairs) and provide hands-on adjustments only when authorized and within scope of practice.
  • Monitor client responses during sessions — physical, emotional and autonomic — and escalate concerns immediately to the supervising yoga therapist or clinical provider when indicated.
  • Teach accessible breathwork techniques and guided relaxation strategies to reduce stress, improve respiratory function, and support pain management, tracking adherence and outcomes.
  • Document session notes, progress updates, and outcome measures in the electronic health record (EHR) or designated documentation system accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Administer standardized functional assessments and assist with outcome measurement tools (pain scales, range-of-motion, balance tests, PHQ-9/GAD-7 when trained) to measure treatment efficacy and progress.
  • Prepare treatment spaces and therapeutic props before and after sessions to maintain a professional, welcoming, and safe environment; perform routine maintenance and inventory of supplies.
  • Support telehealth and hybrid service delivery by setting up virtual session technology, providing remote cueing and modifications, and ensuring client privacy and connectivity protocols.
  • Assist in developing sequenced class plans and manuals for specialized populations (e.g., oncology, veterans, older adults, pediatric adaptive yoga) under supervision.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, communicating client observations, adherence, and functional progress to physical therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral health providers, or primary care teams.
  • Provide patient education on home practice routines, self-management strategies, ergonomic modifications and safety precautions; create written and digital resources to support between-session adherence.
  • Facilitate client scheduling, intake paperwork processing, and follow-up communications (reminders, outcome surveys, referrals) to optimize care continuity and retention.
  • Apply trauma‑informed and culturally competent approaches when working with vulnerable populations and adapt language and techniques to ensure psychological safety.
  • Support program quality improvement by collecting session metrics, client feedback, and contributing to the refinement of protocols, curricula, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain professional certifications (CPR/AED, first aid) and complete continuing education in therapeutic yoga methods, anatomy, and relevant clinical skills as required by the employer.
  • Implement infection control and safety protocols (cleaning of props, room ventilation, safe transfer assistance) in clinical and community settings.
  • Participate in staff training and mentorship, offering practical demonstrations, co-teaching opportunities, and onboarding support for new technicians or volunteers.
  • Coordinate referrals to community resources and complementary services (massage therapy, acupuncture, behavioral health) and help facilitate warm handoffs when clinically appropriate.
  • Support research and program evaluation activities by assisting with data collection, consent processes, and fidelity checks for clinical trials or outcome studies when requested.
  • Promote the program through outreach events, wellness fairs, and educational workshops to increase referrals and community engagement.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to the development of instructional materials, handouts, and digital practice playlists to enhance client home practice and program branding.
  • Assist with scheduling logistics, billing follow-ups, and insurance authorization support under supervision.
  • Monitor and report equipment needs, place supply orders, and manage inventory of therapeutic aids and linen.
  • Participate in community outreach and liaison activities to build partnerships with hospitals, outpatient clinics, senior centers, and veteran organizations.
